Badda General has a lot to say about social topics, be it local or international. His latest song “Box Who” takes on the onstage Oscar debacle between Will Smith and Chris Rock where Rock made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will pelted him with open handed slap.
His unique storytelling technique is reminiscent of 80s style dancehall
In fact his song Bitterness with Tallup seems like a modern version of Papa San and Lady G’s Round Table Talk.
He also has several turntable bops with ZJ Liquid.
Badda started doing music from age 7 and he says music is his heritage and it was only natural that he entered the music business. By age 14 he was a staple on sound systems in Western Jamaica.
“I started at birth to be honest as my father was a sound system owner so it was kind of immediate,” he said.
He started his own sound system, “Madd Squad Sound” where he developed an affinity for studying audiences “storytelling is easier to digest mentally and emotionally plus it keeps me on script,” he alluded.
From starting his own studio to having his own studio which he says is his most important achievement in the music business. He has worked with names such as Buju Banton, Sizzla, Charlie Black but his latest song takes on rapper turned actor Will Smith and Chris Rock in the context of Jamaican culture.
“Try dat wid we like bloodfyah posse everybody haffi flat” he sings.
As for why he took on the Will, Jada, Chris Rock saga he says “With the topic of my latest song “Box Who” its an incident that happened on (American)National TV with two of the biggest stars in the world so it is easy for the Caribbean community to relate,” he reasons. “I believe that as long as I make the right songs that can appeal to a mass audience it can definitely work.”
Having been in the business for over two decades at various levels and seeing many artists turning to record labels to fund their careers he says, “I have no issue with artists signing to major labels. As long as it’s comfortable and suits you and you are getting the support to bring your music to the next level.”
Badda hopes to do songs with Busta Rhymes , Nicky Minaj , Cardi B , Future , Drake. He also says he likes a lot of these new rappers.
“I actually like shensea’s Album it have a good vibe.”
Shenseea’s debut album sold 845 pure units in the first week although she has over 7 million social media followers. Badda says “As it pertains to sales it would have been nice if one hundred thousand of her few million followers would just support her and go buy her record.”
He stays far from making Grammy predictions but says, “My thoughts is just hoping the right person wins, I don’t know, but knowing the Grammys history of throwing curveball it might surprise us.
