The nominees for Best Reggae Album at the 2024 Grammys Awards are Born For Greatness by Buju Banton, , Simma by Beenie Man, Cali Roots Riddim 2023 by Collie Buddz, No Destroyer by Burning Spear and Colors Of Royal by Julian Marley.
The announcement was made on Friday November 10 via the Recording Academy’s Live Stream. Buju earns his 7th nomination after his nomination for Upside Down 2020. “Born For Greatness” sold 2600 units in its first week according to data provided to WMV by Luminate.
Beenie Man‘s 17th studio album “Simma” features Shaggy, Sean Paul, Louie Culture, Superstar, HoodCelebrityy, Charly Blacks, Dexta Daps, Shenseea, and international stars Stonebwoy and Mya. This is the dancehall legend’s fourth nomination.
The 19 track album which has not yet made the Billboard charts has sold 500 units in the US during its first week of released according to data provided to WMV by Billboard sales tracker Luminate.
His previous nominations were for “Many Moods Of Moses,” “The Doctor,” and “Art and Life,” the latter of which won him a the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2001.
This is Julian Marley’s third nomination after getting a nod for ‘Awake’ at the 53rd annual Grammys which faced tough competition from Buju Banton’s ‘Rasta Got Soul,’ Gregory Isaacs’ ‘Brand New Me,’ and Sean Paul’s ‘Imperial Blaze.’ Stephen Marley, his brother, secured a win in the same category for the Acoustic version of ‘Mind Control.’
In 2020 he was again nominated for ‘As I Am,’ where it contended with Sly and Robbie & the Roots Radics’ ‘The Final Battle: Sly & Robbie vs. Roots Radics,’ Steel Pulse’s ‘Mass Manipulation,’ and Third World’s ‘More Work to Be Done.’ This was also the year when Koffee’s debut EP ‘Rapture’ claimed the prestigious award.”
This year Burning Spear earns his 13th nomination for Best Reggae Album. Spear has won the award twice.
This year 65 albums were submitted to the Grammys in the category of Best Reggae Album for music’s biggest night. The Best Reggae Album category include ska, and dancehall and there is a 74% reggae requirement in order for projects to be eligible.
