Nearly three decades after its release, 2Pac’s iconic anthem “California Love” has officially surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, marking the late rapper’s first song to achieve the milestone.
Released on December 3, 1995 via Death Row Records, as 2Pac’s comeback single following his release from prison, “California Love” featured Dr. Dre and funk legend Roger Troutman. Originally intended for Dr. Dre’s scrapped The Chronic II, the beat was repurposed for 2Pac after Suge Knight insisted it serve as his comeback single. 2Pac reportedly wrote his verse in just 15 minutes, and the result was a West Coast anthem that resonated far beyond California.
The song interpolates Ronnie Hudson’s 1982 funk hit West Coast Poplock for its unforgettable chorus, delivered through Troutman’s talk box, while the original version sampled Joe Cocker’s Woman to Woman. A remixed version, featuring a sample from Kleeer’s Intimate Connection, was later included on 2Pac’s 1996 double album All Eyez on Me.
“California Love” was a global smash, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks as a double A-side with “How Do U Want It.” It also hit No. 1 in Italy, New Zealand, and Sweden, while reaching the Top 10 in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK.
By year’s end in 1996, the track had secured Top 20 spots on multiple international year-end charts, and it remains one of the defining hits of 1990s hip-hop. On the U.S. decade-end chart for the 1990s, it ranked among the top songs of the era, cementing its status as a cultural landmark.
Music Video Legacy
The music video, directed by Hype Williams, was based on a Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome concept developed by actress Jada Pinkett Smith. Filmed in the California desert in November 1995, it depicted a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world set in 2095, with 2Pac and Dr. Dre leading a desert tribe. The video featured cameos from comedian Chris Tucker, actor Clifton Powell, and Troutman himself, and it ended with a cliffhanger reading “To Be Continued.”
A second video, tied to the remix, showed a house party with appearances from DJ Quik, Jodeci, and Deion Sanders, capturing the celebratory spirit of 2Pac’s arrival at Death Row Records. The visuals would go on to win the 1996 MOBO Award for Best Video and remain a staple on “greatest music videos” lists worldwide.
