“My heart is heavy this morning” reggae singer Christopher Martin says after seven people were shot at a wake for his grandmother in Point Hill St. Catherine.
The Big Deal singer did not confirm if he was on location at the time of the incident but he posted on instagram, “as I reflect on the tragic events that occurred last night at my beloved grandmother’s wake. She was a woman of deep faith and endless sacrifice, someone who taught me the true meaning of love and community. It’s devastating to see violence cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of peace and remembrance.”
The heinous shooting occurred early Wednesday morning at around around 2 a.m., according to reports and left seven people injured, while one individual, who was reportedly a short distance from the wake, was fatally shot.
The gunmen stormed the event, opened fire, and fled the scene on foot. The identity of the deceased remains unknown at this time.
The reggae star who shares a child with dancehall singer Ce’Cile condemned the senseless act and called for an end to violence in Jamaica.
“I condemn all forms of violence and extend my deepest sympathies to the families affected by this senseless act. I pray for those involved to come forward and for our community to support the authorities in bringing justice. Jamaica, we must do better. Life is too precious to be consumed by violence. Let’s choose peace,” he wrote.
