Sevana Opens Up About Playing Judy Mowatt In “Bob Marley: One Love” Movie

Singing sensation Sevana, born Anna-Sharé Blake has signed multiple record deals in her relatively short career including one with Protoje‘s In.Digg.Nation Collective, and released her self-titled six-track EP in 2016, followed by “Be Somebody,” another six-track set in 2020 after In.Digg.Nation inked a production deal with RCA Records.

Now a fully independent artist with the experience and the aspirations for acting, Sevana makes her major motion picture debut in the biopic “Bob Marley: One Love,” portraying Judy Mowatt, a member of the I-Threes. As the film gears up for its release on February 14, the Brand New singer generously shares insights with WMV into her meticulous preparation process and how she paid homage to Judy Mowatt within the narrative of Paramount Pictures’ much-anticipated release.

How was it preparing for the role of Judy Mowatt?

It was a lot of work—many rehearsals and extensive study of her movements. She is the most spirited of the three I-Threes, so you have to learn about her and then internalize it, making it your own without resorting to mere mimicry. It was a colossal learning experience, working alongside talents like Lashawna Lynch, director Ray, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and other skilled actors.

Was this your first time playing a movie role or acting?

No, it wasn’t my first time acting. I’ve been acting since 2014, mostly on smaller screens, in mini-series and films. I’ve also directed several works, including my own music videos. While people primarily know me as a singer, I am proud of my acting experience over the years.

Give us a secret that you used to capture the character.

I honor them by thinking of them as individuals with reactions distinct from mine. By doing this, I fully immerse myself in the scene, believing that I am the character, and the reactions come naturally, with a slight adjustment to match her persona.

Is this your first time on Rebel Salute?

Yes, it’s my very first time. It felt amazing, and I was excited to experience the crowd’s reaction to my performance. Singing on stage brings me joy, and I was pleased with my set, thanks to the talented musicians who worked on it. It was a beautiful experience.

How long have you been in the business?

I’ve been solidly in the business for eight years, since the release of “Me Too Shy.”

You had signed a record deal?

Yes, I signed a few record deals. At the moment, I am independent and have launched my own label while collaborating with distribution partners.

Would you sign another record deal?

If a deal comes along that makes sense, I would 100 percent consider it.

Are you dropping an album soon?

Yes, I am. I can’t reveal the name yet, but it’s coming soon. Expect a project this year, but I won’t give away too much just yet.

How would you define your music now?

Good music.
