Bob Marley and The Wailers’ “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Could You Be Loved” Certified Gold in Brazil

Two of Bob Marley and The Wailers’ iconic singles, “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Could You Be Loved,” have been awarded Gold certifications in Brazil by Pro-Música Brasil

The songs owned by Universal Music Group have surpassed sales of 30,000 digital units or 8 million equivalent audio streams or 40,000,000 equivalent video streams as of June 2024 in the Latin American country.

In Brazil’s the domestic artist, music certifications are awarded based on sales milestones with Gold representing 50,000 units sold, Platinum at 100,000 units, and Diamond at 500,000 units. While for International artists, the thresholds differ slightly, with Gold certification awarded for 30,000 units sold, Platinum for 60,000 units, and Diamond for 250,000 units.

Released as part of The Wailers’ 1977 album Exodus, “One Love/People Get Ready” via Island Records, it is one of Bob Marley’s most celebrated tracks. The song is a fusion of Marley’s “One Love” and Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” creating a powerful anthem of peace and unity. Its timeless message continues to resonate with audiences around the world, promoting the ideals of love, togetherness, and hope.

Its title was carried over to the box office smash “Bob Marley: One Love” biopic which has surpassed sales of 190 million globally.

One Love was first recored in 1965 for their debut studio album The Wailing Wailers, and that version was inducted into the Grammys Hall Of Fame in 2007.

Island Records founder Chris Blackwell stated in his book “The Islander” that he credited Curtis Mayfield on the most popular version found on Exodus because the track contains interpolations of People Get Ready by America soul group The Impressions, a song written by Mayfield.

“One Love/People Get Ready” has been certified Gold by Italy’s FIMI for 25,000 units sold. In New Zealand, the single has reached Gold status with 10,000 units sold, according to RMNZ. Spain’s PROMUSICAE has certified the song Gold for selling 30,000 units. Additionally, in the United Kingdom, “One Love/People Get Ready” has achieved Platinum status with 600,000 units sold, as recognized by the BPI.

“Could You Be Loved,” another beloved track from Bob Marley, was initially released in 1980 as the first single for the album Uprising. This song stands out as one of the tracks on Marley’s magnum opus compilation album “Legend.”

The song peaked at No. 5 upon its released in 1980 and state don the chart for 12 weeks. In February this year it re-entered at at No. 51 then climbed to No. 47 the following week of March 7. In total it has spent 16 weeks on the UK Singles chart.

‘Could You Be Loved; has been certified Gold in Denmark (45,000 units), Germany (250,000 units)  and Platinum in Italy (50,000 units). In New Zealand, it has reached 5× Platinum status with 150,000 units, In Portugal, it has achieved Platinum certification with 10,000 units, according to AFP.

In Spain it is Platinum for 60,000 units, and in the United Kingdom, “One Love/People Get Ready” has been certified 2× Platinum by the BPI, signifying sales of 1,200,000 units.
