It turns out the Founding Fathers of the United States might have had reggae music in mind when they ratified the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. At least, that’s what Adam Gross, President of Ineffable Records, the second largest reggae label in America, suggests.
Gross took to Instagram during the holiday to thank the founding fathers for making Independence fall on the summer time. “Thank you founding fathers for looking out for out artist and making independence Day in summer,” he posted.
He bragged that this season is the best streaming weekend of the year, “Our best streaming weekend of the year is now: 4th of July & the Saturday of 4th of July weekend.”
4th of July is known for back yard barbecues and patriotic celebrations that call for family gatherings where music in played along with fire works. Satellite radio provider SiriusXM says that while fireworks are not good for the dogs, the paying of reggae music soothes the dogs who may be joining the party.
The company directed people to channel 322 to listen to Shaggy’s Boombastic Radio where reggae music can soothe dogs. “FACT: Reggae music soothes dogs, but July 4th fireworks make it their toughest day. With @direalshaggy’s help, let’s give 88 million American pups a better Independence Day.”
Not many new reggae albums were released on July 5th this year as Brian Zisook, Co-Founder and EVP of Global Operations, took to X to advise artists to consider rescheduling their releases during the holiday season, as record label offices will be closed.
“Artists, heads up: Releasing new music during holiday weeks can be risky. With July 4th on a Thursday, many distro, label, and DSP reps will be out of office after Tuesday. If issues arise, they won’t be resolved until 7/8. Consider rescheduling your release…” he tweeted.
Historically, some of the biggest music moments happen on the 4th of July.
In 1995, Foo Fighters released their self-titled debut album, initially a solo project by Dave Grohl, former Nirvana drummer. Grohl’s recordings, meant to be a personal catharsis after Kurt Cobain’s death, gained attention from Capitol Records, leading to critical and commercial success and the formation of the Foo Fighters band.
In 2003, Barry White, the iconic voice behind soul, funk, and disco, passed away at 58. Known for his deep, sultry vocals, White found international fame in the early 70s with hits like “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” and “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything.”
