Rema’s “Calm Down” became the first Afrobeats artist-led track to surpass a billion streams on Spotify, capturing the attention of audiences in Mexico and India.
Lifestyles, movies, holidays and events played a role in how music was consumed globally this year. Following her halftime show performance at the Super Bowl, Rihanna‘s catalog streams went up by 640% with “Bitch Better Have My Money” going up by 2600%, “Diamonds” by 1400%, “Rude Boy” by 1170% and “We Found Love” seeing an increase of 1160% on the platform.
This year on Valentines Day listers created over 200,000 break-up playlists.
Reflecting on other global pop culture trends that defined the year’s most-streamed artists, songs, albums:
Eurovison made an indelible mark this year, as evidenced by the surge in global daily chart positions for winner Loreen’s “Tattoo” and runner-up Käärijä’s “Cha Cha Cha” the day after the final.
Gen Z’s Spotify says, is unwilling to be confined to a single genre, they seamlessly navigated across diverse sounds. Mood-driven listening also gained prominence, with playlists and songs chosen to perfectly encapsulate the prevailing mood or moment.
Colombia emerged as a surprising hub for Mexican music enthusiasm in 2023, ranking as the fifth-largest consumer globally with an impressive 85% consumption spike over the year.
Spotify witnessed a remarkable surge in the consumption of Indian classical instrumental music, particularly in India. Over the past 24 months, India experienced a staggering 500% growth in classical music consumption on the platform, with a notable 45% of listeners under the age of 25.
Mandopop, featuring illustrious artists such as Jay Chou, JJ Lin, and Eason Chan, saw a significant surge with over 500 million monthly streams globally. The genre experienced an almost 45% increase in the past year, showcasing its enduring popularity on a global scale.
