Dancehall legend Beenie Man has earned another major international accolade as his 1998 classic “Who Am I (Sim Simma)” has been certified Gold in the United Kingdom, following its Gold certification in the United States in 2023.

The UK certification, awarded by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on October 23, 2026, for 400,000 units in combined sales and streaming-equivalent consumption.

Produced by Jeremy Harding of 2 Hard Records on the Playground Riddim, “Who Am I” became one of the defining dancehall hits of the late 1990s, helping to propel Beenie Man to a wider international audience.

The song was released as a single from Beenie Man’s eighth studio album, Many Moods of Moses, and became his first UK Top 40 hit, peaking at No. 10 on the Official Singles Chart.

In the United States, the track reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart and No. 15 on the Hot R&B Singles chart, establishing Beenie Man as a crossover force at a time when dancehall was gaining greater mainstream recognition.

Speaking with WMV following the US certification three years ago, producer Jeremy Harding described the record’s enduring success as an extraordinary accomplishment.

“I am elated, it’s a long time overdue, it’s definitely a dancehall classic; nobody predicted it would have lasted this long with the TikTok challenge and all that. It has been a great passive earner; it’s a wonderful achievement and a once-in-a-lifetime record for myself,” Harding said at the time.

According to Jeremy, Beenie Man heard the instrumental being played at a nightclub and immediately expressed an interest in recording on it.

“Beenie heard the riddim at the club, and someone told me ‘Beenie Man seh him a come fi the riddim,’” Harding recalled.

The producer said Beenie Man subsequently delivered a near-perfect recording in what appeared to be a single take, with only the third verse requiring rewriting.

The resulting song, built around the unforgettable “Sim Simma” hook, became a cultural phenomenon that extended far beyond Jamaican dancehall.

Its popularity has endured across generations, finding renewed audiences through streaming platforms, social media and viral challenges.

The “Sim Simma” challenge helped introduce the song to younger listeners, with celebrities including Kim Kardashian participating in the online trend.

The hook also inspired the title of Beenie Man’s 2023 album Simma, which received a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

The recording also draws from “Sections” by Philadelphia hip-hop group The Roots, taken from their 1996 album Illadelph Halflife.

Harding previously recalled questioning why the track had not received its own US certification after The Roots drummer Questlove referred to “Who Am I” as his first Gold record during the period surrounding Beenie Man’s Verzuz appearance.
