BMW SuperBowl Ad With Reggae Singer Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue”

If you watched the SuperBowl last night you’d notice the BMW iX all electric car ad featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Zues and Selma Hayek. The ad entertainingly shows Arnold with the power of electricity on retirement in Palm Springs Florida.

With his sassy wife(Selma) there to encourage him along the way as he navigates the constant request for his electric powers. Just when Zues was running out of patience his wife introduced him to the all new all electric BMW iX which helps him regain his Zest for life.

Towards the end of the ad the music of “Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant can be heard as both Arnold and Selma in character sing “we gonna rock down to electric Avenue and then we take it higher”.

Grant is a Guyanese–British singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, known for blending different genres. Electric Avenue was his biggest first solo hit released in 1982 on the album Killer on the Rampage. The song has sold over 1 million copies and peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best R&B Song of 1983, but lost to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”.

The official handle of the advertisement publication Ad Age tweeted

The “Electric Avenue” that Grant sang about refers to the Electric Avenue in London, and to the 1981 race related Brixton riots in the Brixton district of the city known for its high population of Caribbean immigrants.

The song was also featured in another ad for Florida Power And Light and Eddy himself seems pleased with both looks.
