Turn Your Lights Down Low by Bob Marley and The Wailers Featuring Lauryn Hill has surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify. This is the Marley band’s 20th song to reach the milestone and Lauryn’s 8th.
The song is a remix of the track from the 1977 Exodus album by Bob Marley and The Wailers, the only song on the B side of the album that wasn’t released as a single. The Stephen Marley produced remix with Hill was released on October 19, 1999 on the Chant Down Babylon album (Tuff Gong/Island Records) peaked at No. 1 on the UK R&B Chart and was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards.
The cover version duet which has a rap verse by Hill is certified Gold in France (250,000) and Sweden (15,000) and Platinum in New Zealand (20,000).
According to data provided to WMV by Luminate, “Chant Down Babylon” released October 16, 1999, has sold 1.7 million units in the U.S. including 800K in sales and 197M in on-demand streams as of May 31, 2024. The album executive produced by Maxine Isis Stowe is now eligible for Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association Of America and the album has surpassed 178 million streams on Spotify as of today June 7, 2024.
A new music video was released today with never before seen footage in Tuff Gong studios, but the original music video was directed by American film maker Francis Lawrence who went on the direct I am Legend, and The Hunger Games franchise movies by Warner Bros and Lionsgate respectively.
At the time Lauryn Hill was signed to Columbia Records and the song was part of the soundtrack on The Best Man movie by Universal Pictures. Rohan Marley, the father of Lauryn Hill’s 5 children was the featured love interests riding motorbike to pick up Lauryn as Bob Marley sings “I want to give you some good good loving.”
