The 2022 Billboard Year-End charts which rank the most consumed artists all albums over the period are out. Leading the “Reggae Albums Artists” category is Bob Marley & The Wailers.
The King Of Reggae – remains a constant on the Billboard chart this year as Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley & The Wailers out-streams all reggae albums by multiples over the last 5 years in the US.
The Marley collection has spent 151 weeks at No. 1 on the weekly reggae albums sales and streams driven chart.
According to data provided exclusively to WMV by Billboard sales tracker Luminate, the Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley & The Wailers first released in 1984 has so far sold more than 3,500,000 million equivalent units (sales with SEA, with TEA).
This is since it’s re-release on streaming platforms where it has accumulated 3.5 billion in total on-demand streams (audio + video).
The album is the top album on the reggae year end chart and is No. 77 (No. 60 last year) on the Year-End Billboard 200 Albums chart.
Stick Figure – 2
Stick Figure comes in at No. 2 on the Reggae Year End Chart. The group’s 7th studio album “Wisdom” peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard reggae chart and has been in the top ten since it’s September release. The album has sold more than 53,400 equivalent album units according to data provided by WMV sales trackers Luminate.
Of that figure up to November 15, pure sales for Wisdom is 14,300 copies and 50.3 million total on-demand streams (audio + video) over its lifetime. Their other set ‘World On Fire’ moves up one slot to No. 7 and ‘Set In Stone’ moves up to No. 7.
The group has three albums on the Billboard Reggae Year-End Chart. World On Fire, Set In Stone and Wisdom at No. 4, 6, and 9 respectively.
Sean Paul– 3
At No. 3 on is Sean Paul. His Dutty Classics peaked At No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae albums chart in its 121st week.
He has four albums on the Billboard Year End Albums Chart. Dutty Classics Collection at No. 3, Dutty Rock at No. 7, Mad Love: The Prequel at No. 10, and The Trinity at No. 14.
Yesterday WMV reported that the Grammy winning artist is once again the most streamed dancehall act on Spotify globally for the year ending 2022. He also has the most streamed dancehall song on the platform, No Lie Ft. Dua Lipa.
The dancehall-Pop collab has also surpassed the one billion views on YouTube , five years after its release. It’s the Jamaican superstar’s first song as a lead artist to enter the billion views club on the Google owned platform.
Shaggy – 4
Shaggy comes in at No. 4 on the year end chart. His Best Of Shaggy: Boombastic Collection spent the entire year in the top ten on the Billboard Reggae chart. The compilation which recently went Gold in the U.K. spends 191 weeks on the top ten chart.
The Hot Shot artist told WMV: “I’m filled with gratitude, anytime you have a body of work that is recurrent as this it is a significant accomplishment, especially in our genre.”
The Best Of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection by Shaggy is at No. 2 on the Year-End albums chart.
UB40- 5
UB40’s Greatest Hits spent most of the year in the top ten on the Billboard reggae chart. This week marks 219 weeks for the album on the weekly chart. The album is at No. 5 on the Billboard Year-End Album chart.
Koffee- 6
Grammy kid Koffee lands at No. 6 on the year end chart. Her debut album “Gifted” is the most most streamed reggae album released this year.
According to data provided to WMV US sales trackers Luminate; the album released March 25, has so far clocked more that 340 million streams in the US. That’s 223,000 album equivalent units (with SEA, and with TEA) including pure album sales of 1,600.
The Colombia/RCA recording release debuted at number 2 on the Reggae Billboard chart on the week of April 5 with 3500 total units sold in the US in the first week according to Luminate. At the time the album did 700 in total album sales with 3,290,800 streams in one week. Koffee’s “Gifted” also debuted at number 9 on the UK top 100 albums chart.
Gifted also landed at No. 11 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, which ranks the sales by new and developing musical recording artists each week.
This is Koffee’s most commercially successful project to date. It lands at No. 8 on the Year End Reggae albums chart.
Jason Mraz- 7
A lesser known act to many in the reggae community is American singer Jason Mraz who lands at No. 7 on the 2021 Billboard Reggae Year End Artist Albums chart.
Mraz, 45, didn’t release an album this year but his 2020 project “Look For The Good” peaked at No. 2 on 7/4/20 and spent 31 weeks on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart. It lands at No. 11 on the Billboard Year-End albums chart.
Throughout his career: the 2002 single “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)”, reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The Virginia native’s next two studio albums, Mr. A-Z (2005), and We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. (2008), peaked in the top five on the Billboard 200; with the latter album spawning the non-reggae Grammy Award winning singles “Make It Mine”, and “Lucky” with Colbie Caillat.
Mraz, who is heavily influenced by Brazilian music has been Diamond certified by the RIAA with his single “I’m Yours”, which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100, while spending a then-record 76 weeks on the Hot 100. His fourth album, Love Is a Four Letter Word (2012), peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, becoming his highest-charting album to date, and spawned the single “I Won’t Give Up”, which became his second top ten on the Hot 100.
Shenseea- 8
At No. 8 is Shenseea on the Year En Artist-Albums Chart and at No. 13 is her debut album Alpha on the Year End Albums chart.
The Dancehall princess continues to break records at her own pace as her debut album Alpha leads the charge as the most streamed project by a dancehall artist this year in the US. The Interscope/Rich Immigrants set released March 11 has so far earned more than 90 million on-demand streams or 60,000 equivalent album units (SEA,TEA) according data provided to World Music Views by Billboard sales tracker Luminate. Of that sum, pure album sales comprise 1300.
The data compiled by Luminate is based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
Alpha sold 4,900 units total from sales and streaming in the United States in its first week of release, according to data provided to World Music Views Luminate. This included 800 copies in pure album sales.
Rebelution- 9
At No. 9 is the California band Rebelution. The group was on tour for much of the year and their album Live At The Red Rocks has spent 91 weeks on the weekly Billboard Reggae chart. The album comes in at No. 9 this week and peaked at No. 7. The albums is No. 13 on the reggae year end chart.
Their last studio album In The Moment released June 18, 2021 through 87 Music-and Easy Star Records, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and No. 36 on Independent Albums chart. It also debuted at No. 22 on Billboard’s Current Albums Sales chart, and No. 35 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart.
Iration- 10
Also based in California, Iration recently recruited Zinc Fence Redemption Band Drummer Hector Lewis as their lead singer. The group is known one of the leading bands in the sun-genre of sunshine reggae.
Their latest album Backyard Sessions: Malibu edition debuted at No. 8 this week on the US Reggae albums chart.
Four of their albums have made the Billboard 200 over the last decade. The highest position being Automatic which spent one week on the chart at No. 75 the week of July, 20, 2013. Hitting Up spent 1 week at No. 79, Their 2011 EP Fresh Ground spend 1 week at No. 147, and Iration spent 1 week at 199. Time Bomb lands at No. 15 in the Year End Reggae Album chart.
