Bob Marley’s Classic ‘Waiting In Vain’ Certified Gold in the UK

Cindy Breakspear, Bob Marley

Bob Marley and The Wailers’ song “Waiting In Vain” released on 1977 has been certified Gold in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for surpassing 400,000 copies sold. This achievement given on Friday September 1, 2023, adds to the list of ten records certified Gold or higher in the UK for the legendary Reggae group, showcasing its enduring status as a classic even in the streaming era.

“Waiting In Vain” was originally released as a single in 1977 and climbed the UK Singles Chart, reaching No. 27, and later No. 31 seven years later. It’s one of the few songs by Marley and The Wailers with a non-album B side and was included in the Diamond-selling “Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley & The Wailers” compilation that was compiled by music executive Dave Robinson.

The song delves into the theme of unrequited love, set against a soothing backdrop of acoustic guitar and the distinctive bass line characteristic of the group’s sound. The percussion, featuring subtle drums and handclaps, adds rhythmic complexity, inviting listeners to empathize with Marley’s lyrical narrative of love and longing.

“Three Little Birds” remains Bob Marley & The Wailers’ most certified song in the UK, achieving double platinum status last year with over 1,200,000 units sold. Six other songs by the group are certified Platinum, and a few others hold Gold or Silver certifications, attesting to the enduring popularity of their music in the UK.
