Dancehall artist Bounty Killer recently took to Instagram to reminisce about his collaboration with iconic Jamaican singer Grace Jones. The Warlord shared a reminder of their song “My Jamaican Guy,” commenting, “Lots of my fans do not know this song 🥳🥳 @gracejonesofficial x @1unogeneral.”
The song is a remix mashup of Jones’ 1982 song of the same name and Bounty Killer’s “Mi Nature” (1996), track 13 on his My Xperience album. Produced by Sly & Robbie, that version of “My Jamaican Guy” was released by Virgin Records on the album Sly & Robbie Present Beenie Man & Bounty Killer: The Taxi Series on June 14, 2011.
The original recording of “My Jamaican Guy” was a dedication by Jones to Wailers keyboardist Tyrone Downie, whom she says she couldn’t have because he was in a relationship. “He was a beautiful guy. He doesn’t even know I wrote it about him,” Jones told The Guardian in a 2010 interview. The track was the third single from her third studio album Living My Life by Island Records and stayed on the UK Singles Chart for five weeks, peaking at No. 56 and No. 39 on the New Zealand chart.
Bounty previously shouted out Jones in an Instagram, post saluting her as one of the greatest female figures in Jamaica’s history. “Nanny/Grace Jones/Miss Lou/Merlene Ottley Jamaica’s greatest female figures in my history books 📚,” he noted, later replying “fact of fact”, to a fan who had noted that: Louise Bennett’s “works has led to what the world has come to recognize as Dancehall music,” he posted.
Digging further in his vault on Monday, Bounty shared a Songstats image of his collaborative track “Lets Go Dancing (Ohh La La La” with Kool and the Gang and Jimmy Cliff.
You can catch Bounty Killer at the Guinness Sound Of Greatness happening on Saturday, July 6th, at Mas Camp, Kingston Jamaica.
