On Monday February 23, Lauderhill City officials honored Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Busy Signal, Spragga Benz and Wayne Wonder with citations for their charitable work during the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
In receiving his citation Vybz Kartel said, “Thank you to the Mayor, Ms. Grant, Thank you to the city. These proclamations mean a lot to me because I was in Canada the the hurricane hit…we went to Jamaica and mobilize we drama nd get things going. TO be honored this way is a pleasure.”
Last year Reggae icon Sizzla Kalonji received the Key to the City of Lauderhill and a U.S. Congressional Honor during Jamaica’s 63rd Independence Celebration on August 3 in Broward County. The city marked the occasion with the “Solid As A Rock” concert, featuring performers including Lady G, Admiral Tibet, Etana, Hal Anthony and Roy Rayon, backed by the Code Red Band.
The honor recognizes Sizzla’s influence beyond music, highlighting his lifelong advocacy for disadvantaged communities, African heritage, spirituality and unity within the global African diaspora. Known for his socially conscious lyrics, the artist—born Miguel Collins—has long promoted themes of empowerment, self-determination and Rastafari principles.
“I was emotionally moved. Touched by the gesture. Filled with joy and excitement. As my fans worldwide would be so happy,” Sizzla said, adding that the recognition affirms a deeper mission to reconnect African people with their roots
