Buju Banton’s ‘Til Shiloh’ Turns 30: “The Greatest Jamaican Album of the Last Forty-Five Years”

On July 18, 1995, Buju Banton released ‘Til Shiloh, his fourth studio album and the clearest signal of a dramatic artistic shift. Known up to that point for his gritty dancehall delivery and streetwise lyrics, Banton used this record to pivot toward a more introspective, spiritually anchored sound rooted in Rastafari and social consciousness. The album’s wealth of singles charts the evolution of his voice and intent—moving away from aggression and toward joy, reflection, and redemption.

Released by Loose Cannon Records, a division of Island Records, the album was co-produced by Donovan Germain, Dave and Tony Kelly, Bobby Digital, Sylvester Gordon, and Steely & Clevie. Musicians featured on the album include Sly Dunbar, Dean Fraser, Dalton Browne, Glen Browne, and Handel Tucker.

“A generational masterpiece, Buju Banton’s ‘Til Shiloh is the greatest Jamaican album of the last forty-five years, and one of the greatest ever in any music genre,” remarked music historian Wayne Chen to WMV.

The track list included songs such as “Untold Stories,” “Til I’m Laid to Rest,” “Not an Easy Road,” and “Untold Stories” was later covered by Sinéad O’Connor on her 2005 reggae album Throw Down Your Arms.

Hush Baby Hushride jubilant, double-time steppers rhythms, deeply rooted in the traditional flirtation and ecstasy of inner city dancehall’s around the world, without glorifying violence.

The album debuted at No. 148 on the Billboard 200, No. 27 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart behind Shaggy’s Boombastic, which was concluding a 12-week run at No. 1.

In 2019, ‘Til Shiloh was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for sales and streaming equivalent units exceeding 500,000 in the United States. It is Buju Banton’s highest-selling album in the country. In 2025, the album surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify. The single “Champion” was certified Gold in Canada in July 2023 for sales and streams over 40,000, making it his best-selling single in North America.

The album was reissued in 2002 with the addition of “Sensemilia Persecution” and “Rampage.” In 2020, a 25th Anniversary Edition was released with remixes of “Not an Easy Road,” “Wanna Be Loved,” and the previously unreleased “Come Inna The Dance.” Music videos were remastered in HD.

Critical reception was positive. Pitchfork rated the album and almost perfect score of 9.4 out of 10. Noting that in this sense, “it is a uniquely satisfying dancehall album, a document of what was actually happening on dancefloors and sound systems; an unprecedented rejection of violence, experienced and expressed collectively in real time through music.”

The Village Voice gave it an A−, with Robert Christgau calling it “the most fully accomplished reggae album since the prime of Black Uhuru.”

The album’s title, according to producer Donovan Germain, means “forever.” The opening track, “Shiloh,” was based on an intro Banton used during live performances.

Personnel included vocal contributions from Garnett Silk and Wayne Wonder, instrumentation by Steely & Clevie, Dean Fraser, and others, and production by Bobby Digital and Donovan Germain, among multiple engineers and musicians.

‘Til Shiloh remains Buju Banton’s most critically and commercially recognized album to date.
