It has been ten years since a foreign based global superstar performed in Jamaica. The last was Celine Dion at the Trelawny Multi-purpose stadium in March 2012 at Jamaica Jazz and Blues. At the time tickets to see the Power Of Love star were USD$300 for VIP and more than 27,000 people filled the stadium with traffic going as far back as St. Ann.
As news of the Burna Boy Live- Love, Damini concert in Jamaica spreads, the number one most searched google topic in the is “Burna Boy Concert Tickets Jamaica.”
On Twitter, both “Burna” and VVIP trended No. 1 and No. 5 respectively.
The much anticipated concert has drawn the attention of both supporters and critics who have said that the tickets are too expensive for a country like Jamaica.
One person tweeted “Jamaicans getting to see Burna Boy for $7500 is literally incredible. What”
While another tweeted, “Over priced, waste of time….smh.”
Regardless of what Twitter says the concert is set to be the event of the season and already persons are securing their best seats in the stadium.
Burna Boy who has just been nominated for two Grammy Awards ‘Love, Damini’ – Best Global Music Album” and “Last Last”- Best Global Music Performance” will be the first African to headline a concert in a stadium in Jamaica.
The national Stadium has a seating capacity of 27,000 whenever there are sporting events but when Buju Banton held his Long Walk To Freedom concert in 2019, more than 50,000 packed the venue.
Burna is scheduled to do three shows over three days in three different islands, including Antigua and Trinidad that weekend, with the last stop in Jamaica on Sunday December 18.
Jamaica’s national stadium is not known best for its acoustics and event staged at the venue including Buju’s Long Walk To Freedom Concert in 2019 experienced issues with sound not going further than a few feet from the front of the stage.
Events manager Mathew Lawrence tweeted at the time :
This issue however is not unique to Jamaica as Switzerland, Poland and Singapore’s National Stadium are said to have a similar problem according to tweeters.
Mathew suggested that additional equipment is needed which is not available in Jamaica. The promoters for the event, Duke Concepts, have been staging events with Burna and other Afrobeats stars all over the world in collaboration with Live Nation. So far there has not been any significant complaints about the Burna Boy live which had its kickstart in Madison Square Garden with two sold out shows in April.
