Global superstar Busta Rhymes was overwhelmed with emotion as he accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 BET Awards on Sunday night. The prestigious honor was presented to him by Marlon Wayans and Swizz Beatz during the esteemed event that celebrates cultural excellence.
In his acceptance speech, Busta Rhymes, known for his rapid-fire delivery and intricate rhymes, deviated from his usual energetic demeanor and spoke with sincerity about his career and life’s trajectory. Expressing his vulnerability, the 51-year-old artist admitted, “All right. So, I’m going to wear it on my sleeve. I do want to cry,” which elicited a resounding cheer from the audience.
Taking a reflective pause, he recounted a story from nearly three decades ago that jumpstarted his career and emphasized the enduring passion he holds for his craft. “I’m going to say I am grateful that the blessing that has been bestowed upon me and this gift that I have been given and this fire that continues to burn as a passion in my soul, that allows me to get into any situation — from the stage to collabing with whoever — and making sure that I am far from the weak link,” he shared. “Because I enjoy walking away from a situation saying, ‘I bust ass!'”
He further expressed his commitment to advancing the culture and making significant contributions, acknowledging the presence of familiar faces in the room who have witnessed his growth over the years. “I see so many people in here that I have known and grown with for a long time, you’re watching me grow and I love y’all and I know y’all love me.”
Before the heartfelt speech, a touching video package showcased Busta’s remarkable accomplishments across music, movies, and TV. Esteemed figures such as Diddy, Pharrell Williams, Janet Jackson, and Dave Chappelle, among others, reflected on the artist’s incredible legacy. Notably, the package highlighted his contributions to the film industry, featuring appearances in notable movies like Higher Learning, Shaft, and Halloween: Resurrection.
