Capitol Records “has severed ties” with the A.I. rapper FN Meka, “effective immediately,” following backlash over the deal signed with the robot who uses racial slurs.
The activist group @industryblkout called for a formal public apology on Tuesday.
Last week news broke that Capitol Records was the first label to sign a rapper designed from Artificial Intelligence.
Many fans expressed indifference to the manufactured rapper, especially its’ use of certain words.
FN Meka’s debut single “Florida Water” was released this week. The song is a collaboration with top-charting artist Gunna, who’s currently dealing with charges in a RICO case alongside fellow Atlanta artist Young Thug. The two are also joined by professional Fortnite player Clix on “Florida Water.”
According to KKTV, Capitol Records shared that the project is a mix of music, technology and gaming culture.
Capitol Records had said that they are leading the charge in the evolution of music, referring to it as a “preview of what’s to come.”
In their about turn today August 23, they sent out a statement saying they have severed ties effective immediately and adding “we offer our deepest apologies to the black community” for signing the robot.
Industry Blackout celebrated with a tweet, “We did it Joe,” referring to VP Kamala Harris’ phone call to Joe Biden after the 2020 US election.
