“Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix)” by Omi is now 5x Platinum in the UK. The award was issued on Friday July 5, 2024 for selling 3,000,000 units in the country by the British Phonographic Industry.
Omi won a copyright infringement lawsuit for his song “Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix).” Millions in publishing royalties were frozen since November 2020, following a case by French musicians Adlane and Badr Defouad, alleging elements of their song “Chajra” were used in Omi’s remix.
Despite legal proceedings and an appeal, the court deemed the infringement action inadmissible. Omi’s manager, Ryan Dillon, mentioned that royalties should unfreeze by February. Additionally, Sony Music is suing Patrick Moxey, former owner of Ultra Records, for alleged trademark violations.
The track “Cheerleader (Felix Jaehn Remix),” Produced by Omi and Clifton ‘Specialist’ Dillon, stands out as the sole solo song by a Jamaican artist to surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify and achieving the No. 1 position in 24 countries, including the U.K., various European regions, and Canada. The song also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for six non-consecutive weeks.
This success of the track catapulted Omi into overnight stardom, garnering attention from pop icons like Taylor Swift who he toured with.
