Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock” has officially been certified Platinum in the United Kingdom. According to the British Phongraphic Industry (BPI) to song has sold 600,000 units in streams asn sales as of October 3, 2025 as measured by the Official Charts Company.
Released on March 14, 2005, the track served as the lead single from Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock album and quickly became one of the most important reggae releases of the 21st century.
Produced by Stephen Marley and written by Damian himself, the track fused reggae and hip hop while delivering a raw commentary on crime, poverty, and political corruption in Jamaica.
The song’s gritty realism resonated globally, contrasting Jamaica’s idyllic tourist image with the struggles faced in “Jamrock.” Built on Ini Kamoze’s 1984 “World-A-Reggae” riddim created by Sly & Robbie, the single became a cultural flashpoint.

“Welcome to Jamrock” peaked at No. 13 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 55 on the US Billboard Hot 100, while also climbing into the Top 20 of the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Tracks charts. Its impact went beyond the charts: the track was listed at No. 270 on Pitchfork’s Top 500 Songs of the 2000s, featured on major video game soundtracks including FIFA 06, Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition Remix, The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (Simlish version), and most recently FIFA 23.
At the 48th Grammy Awards in 2006, Marley took home the award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, cementing the song’s legacy as a crossover reggae anthem.
Lasting Legacy
In addition to its certification in the UK, “Welcome to Jamrock” has earned Gold status in Brazil and was previously certified Gold in the UK (400,000) before this Platinum update. The track has also been covered and sampled internationally, including a live medley version recorded by Alicia Keys featuring Common, Mos Def, and Marley himself for her Unplugged album in 2005.
