Dancehall artist Teejay‘s debut EP, “I Am Chippy,” officially debuts at No. 9 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.
The 10 track set released by Warner Records in its first week of release had sales of 1,000 combined album units in sea/tea (Sales Equivalent Albums/Track Equivalent Albums).
Of that amount, the project which comes ahead of his debut album sold 200 copies and 1.1 million official streams according to Luminate.
Last week the EP rose to the top of the Reggae iTunes Chart, dethroning Bob Marley’s “Legend” compilation and then stayed in the top ten for the entire week marking Teejay’s first No. 1 project in this genre.
It is the first dancehall EP to debut on the Billboard Reggae albums chart in 2024.
With ambitions to make an entry on the Billboard chart, Teejay embarked on a campaign across North America last week, visiting cities like Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, and Miami. He finished the week in Cancun Mexico where he proposed to his long time girlfriend Tionna.
“I AM CHIPPY” continues to make waves across the Caribbean, climbing charts in numerous countries on Apple Music in Jamaica (#3), Belize (#4), Dominica (#4), and Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana (#5) and Madagascar (#20). Meanwhile, on iTunes, Teejay continues to dominate in Grenada (#1) and the Cayman Islands (#5 peaked at No. 1).
Led by the breakout hit “Drift,” which debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Airplay chart, the EP boasts executive production from Grammy-winning dancehall star Shaggy, Teejay himself, Sharon Burke, and Steve “Steve-O” Carless. It features collaborations with Davido, Tommy Lee Sparta, Jaydon, Quada, Skillibeng, Bayka, and Malie Donn.
Production credits go to a mix of talents including Panda, Sadeque, Sabaster Muzik, DJ Frass, Asa Oneil Smith, Mario Hemmings, Che Earle, Don James, Yung Alpha, DJ MAC, Topbraff Music, and Extol.
Elsewhere on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, Bob Marley is at the top with “Legend” extending its record for 214 weeks at No. 1 and Marley and the Bob Marley and Wailers again at the tail of the chart with Rastaman Vibration which re-enters at No. 10.
Best Of Shaggy: Boombastic Collection is at No. 2 Dutty Classics by Sean Paul at No. 3, UB 40’s Greatest Hits remains at No. 4. World On Fire by Stick Figure moves up to No. 5. The California Regge band also occupies the No. 7 and No. 8 spot with Set In Stone and Wisdom.
