“Dangerous” by Canadian- Jamaican rapper Kardinal Offishall featuring Akon has been certified 3x Platinum in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Of America Association (RIAA). The track released January 1, 2008 achieved its latest milestone of selling 3,000,000 units as of January 13, 2023. The party starter also received Platinum and Gold certificates the same day.
It was certified quadruple platinum in Canada (January 17, 2023) for selling 320,000 units in that country. In November it was certified Gold in the U.K. For selling 400,000 units in that country according to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).
The reggae-Hip Hop/R&B track is produced by DJ Kemo and hAZEL, and was the lead single from Kardinal’s fourth studio album “Not 4 Sale”.
It was first released to radio in March 2008, and a month later on iTunes.
The music video for Dangerous has surpassed 255 million views on YouTube. It is one of the defining tracks of the era and a definitive moment for Kardinal and Akon’s North American music career.
In 2009 the song won the award for Single of the Year at the Canadian based 2009 Juno Awards and In March 2010, the single was certified 3× platinum in Canada by Music Canada (CRIA) and certified Gold in Denmark (45,000).
It peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Rhythmic radio chart. In Kardinal’s home country it peaked at No. 2 on the Canadian Hot 100.
“Dangerous” has been one of the precisely released tracks that have found a home on social media and success on the streaming charts. It had a resurgence on TikTok in early last year and subsequently the song ranked 50 on the Spotify Viral 50 chart.
In August, rapper Lil Wayne answered the question who is his favorite Canadian artist outside of Drake and after being given the options to select Justin Bieber, Avril Levine or Fefe Dobson, Wayne said his favorite rapper is Kardinal Offishall.
