Dexta Daps’ “Trilogy” — Album Review

Jamaican sensation Dexta Daps’ third studio album, “Trilogy,” his second independent release under DDMG, on the artist’s birthday, January 12, 2024 stands as a natural progression of 2017’s “Intro” and 2020’s “Vent” as expressed by Dexta during the album launch.

The 16 track album features notable collaborations with Masicka, Chronic Law, Jada Kingdom, Rally Banks, and Alaine.

For the uninitiated Dexta listener, the album may be digested in segments with the Reality segment having “OK” featuring Masicka, delivering an encouraging message that urges listeners to persevere despite life’s challenges. Other tracks like “Showers of Blessings” and “Friendship Sale” featuring Chronic Law delve into the various facets of everyday life, exploring the for better or worst evolution of relationships with friends and family.

Shifting gears to the Explicit and Steamy section, “Forever,” released in 2023 and amassing over 5.5 million Spotify streams and 7 million YouTube music video streams is where Dexta is most comfortable, using charm and sexual allure, catering to the musical tastebuds of his devoted fanbase. Other tracks in this section like “Demon Time,” showcases Dexta’s witty and explicit yet seductive musical style. “Show me your true colors/a mad gal me like, you wanna f*ck just start a fight because the moon is full,” he sings convincingly.

Dancehall’s toxic king adds a layer to his output in the Heart Of Love segment featuring collaborations with Jada Kingdom on “Purge” and Alaine on “See It Yah.” “Butterfly” finds him navigating a funky pop-like beat, suggesting he is ready to spread his wings beyond the reggae charts.

“Trilogy” is a well-crafted and impactful album where Dexta Daps skillfully explores various themes and musical styles. With praises from his peers including an endorsements from the likes of Gold selling singer Tarrus Riley, saying he is the most talented act out of Jamaica in the last 5 years, Dexta Daps has the emotional intelligence to satisfy the earbuds of his shameless fans who have an appetite for on stage sexual excitement but still manages to connect with listeners of a more sophisticated taste.
