Diana King Celebrates 30 Years of Shy Guy, the Most Certified Solo Single by a Female Jamaican Artist

On March 14, 1995, Jamaican singer-songwriter Diana King introduced the world to “Shy Guy,” a track that would define her career and become a staple of the reggae fusion genre.

King celebrated the track’s 30th anniversary milestone with several posts on her Instagram Story stating: “Happy 30th Shy Guy.”

It was the lead single from both her debut album, Tougher Than Love (Colombia Records), and the soundtrack to the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence action-comedy Bad Boys.

The track written by King, Kingsley Gardner, and producer Andy Marvel, with a groove that borrowed from Average White Band’s 1975 track “School Boy Crush,” King’s smoky vocals, delivered in a mix of English and Jamaican patois, set it apart from other pop-chart contenders of the time.

However, A&R Maxine Stowe remember telling King that she should sing and move away from the dancehall flow.

“When I saw Rihanna break through, I thought that was what I had in mind for Diana. I would say that Diana’s reluctance to be fully Americanized was her limitation because her voice was big enough, but culturally she couldn’t let go,” Stowe told World Music Views.

Stowe discovered Diana put her demo single ‘Stir It Up’ on the Kool Runnings Soundtrack two years earlier in 1993.

The many remixes of “Shy Guy,” helped to engineer in into a hit Stowe said, “Having to spend over $100,000 USD on remixes and edits. It was an education on the role of remixes to engage the multiple formats of the mainstream markets. Dancehall, Dance, Urban, Rhythm & Top 40.”

“Shy Guy” arrived at the height of the 1990s’ love affair with reggae-influenced pop and it remains one of the most globally certified solo single by a Jamaican female artist of all time being certified Gold in the U.K. by the British Phonographic Industry and in the U.S. by the Recording Industry Association Of America for sales and streams surpassing 400,000 and 500,000 units respectively.

It is also Platinum in Australia (ARIA) (70,000) and Gold in France (250,000), Germany (250,000), Belgium (25,000) and New Zealand (5,000).

The song’s inclusion in Bad Boys helped propel it onto international charts peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and No. 2 in the U.K..

It topped the charts in Finland, Sweden, and Zimbabwe and reached the top five in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Norway.

Two music videos were made for the track, reflecting its dual life as both a solo hit and a movie soundtrack. The first, directed by Marcus Nispel, was a stark black-and-white visual that aligned with the aesthetic of Tougher Than Love and has surpassed 61 million views on YouTube. The second, helmed by Michael Bay, leaned into the Hollywood blockbuster energy of Bad Boys, featuring King alongside Smith and Lawrence has 13 million views on YouTube.

The commercial success of “Shy Guy” helped pave the way for reggae fusion as a mainstream genre. In the years that followed, artists like Sean Paul, Shaggy, and Rihanna would benefit from the foundation that hits like “Shy Guy” helped lay. The song has been covered and sampled multiple times, including versions by Brazilian group Fat Family and American singer Mýa.
