Grammy-winning DJ Diplo of Major Lazer recently revealed his art-filled Jamaican home nestled in the hills of Portland for Architectural Digest.
The parish is a sought-after place for high-net-worth creatives, and Diplo’s latest palatial residence makes him a neighbor to reggae singers Chronixx and Alborosie, who both have properties nearby.
Adorned with art, including an oversized breadfruit sculpture, Diplo’s residence offers stunning views of both the mountains and the Caribbean Sea. It is equipped with a state-of-the-art gym, a wellness center, and, of course, a built-in studio.
“It took us a long time to get it right, but it was really worth it,” Diplo said about the rare concrete structure.
The property, which lies across from the world-famous Blue Lagoon, includes a farm with a stable of horses, one of which is named Megan Thee Stallion.
The house itself is called Pompey, a misspelling of the ancient city Pompeii in southwestern Italy, on the Bay of Naples. “I love that you can walk through the house and sort of see a picture of what we have, the wilderness of Jamaica,” Diplo told Architectural Digest.
“I have been coming to Jamaica for almost 20 years to record, to make music. We have done a lot of concerts here. I have a group called Major Lazer, and I think I owe a lot of my success to Jamaica,” the top-selling producer said.
Pompey has been in the making for seven years. “I found this 50-acre piece of land and I had a vision for what I wanted to build. Seven years later, we got it finished,” Diplo explained.
Designed by the New York-based architectural firm Freecell, the house reflects Diplo’s love of Brazilian architecture and brutalist design. “I love Brazilian architecture; really, the brutalist look is what I love about this place,” he said.
