Drake Expresses More Love For Sizzla’s “Dry Cry”

Drake reminisced on two of his favorite songs as an up and coming artists recently at Tyrone “T-rex” Edwards’ ‘Nostalgia’ Karaoke Party in Toronto.

The “God’s Plan” rapper said two of Sizzla Kalonji’ hits, 2002 Bobby Digital produced hit “Just One Of Those Days” (Dry Cry) and his 2007 collaboration “Hush,” were songs he’d listen for at the club after handing out fliers.

Reminiscing about his early club promotion days, Drake shared the significance of these tracks and their impact on him.

At the event, Drake also showcased his vocal versatility by singing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” Donell Jones’ “Where I Wanna Be,” and Usher’s “U Don’t Have To Call,” much to the delight of the partygoers. Host Tyrone “T-rex” Edwards and others joined in the nostalgic celebration, dancing on stage to the Jamaican beats of Beres Hammond and Cutty Ranks.

While dancehall artists like Mr. Vegas have labeled Drake a “culture vulture” for sometimes uncredited interest in Dancehall and Reggae, his dancehall inspired song“One Dance” with WIZKID has sold 11 million units.

Drake who signed Popcaan to a label deal with Warner and OVO release collabs with the St. Thomas deejay such as “Controlla” (2016), “My Chargie” (2017), “Twist & Turn” with PartyNextDoor (2020), “All I Need” (2020), and “We Caa Done” (2023).

A few months ago the Rich Flex rapper quoted Sizzla’s opening line of the song “Thank You Mama”, from the album Da Real Thing (2002) in a picture post of his son, his mother and father with the caption: “Thank you mama for the nine months you carried be through…all the pain and suffering. No one knows the pressure you bear just only you…give you all my love” and he credit “Kalonji”, Sizzla’s moniker.

Drake’s “For All The Dogs Scary Hours Edition” is currently No. 1 in Jamaica on Apple Music.
