For a second year in a row Canadian superstar Drake is the most streamed artist in Jamaica.
According to data obtained exclusively by World Music Views from our Spotify correspondence, the Rich Flex rapper leads the top 10 list of artists in the island. Drake is also crowned Spotify’s No. 1 most streamed artist in the US in 2022.
Last year Drake was reported to be the leading artist for the 9 month period from March 2021 ending December 2021 in Jamaica, to the displeasure of many local artists. Subsequently, in an exclusive interview Spotify’s communications manager Julia Lavender told WMV that artists and users in Jamaica are embracing the platform.
“Since (last year) Spotify has had a warm welcome from artists and users alike. Data from the year unveils that Jamaicans are enjoying their local music scene, with Alkaline, Vybz Kartel, Masicka and Skillibeng all being the most played artists – both on the global and local top list,” said Lavender.
Six dancehall acts make up the top ten most streamed artists across their catalogue this year, including newcomer Skeng at no. 2, Vybz Kartel at No. 3, Masicka at No. 4, Alkaline at No. 6, Squash at No. 9 and Chronic Law at No. 10.
Other international acts in the top 10 in Jamaica are The Weeknd, Doja Cat and Chris Brown at No. 5, 7 and 8 respectively.
Skeng has the two most streamed songs in Jamaica, Protocol & Gvman Shift at No. 1 and No. 2, Marksman’s Verified Choppa 2 comes in at No. 3, Squash’s Ambala at No. 4 and Burna Boy’s Last Last at No. 5.
The independent project has so far earned 32,600 equivalent album units (SEA,TEA) in the US. Of that sum, pure album sales in the US were 1,200 (together equaling total on-demand streams (audio + video) over its lifetime of 48.8 million).
