Drake‘s latest release, “For All The Dogs,” which hit the music streaming platorms on October 6th, has sparked speculation among fans about whether he aimed a few shots at his former flame, Rihanna. The social media world went abuzz following the album’s drop, with fans pointing to specific tracks, “Fear of Heights” and “Virginia Beach,” as containing thinly veiled references to RiRi.
In the intro of “Fear of Heights,” Drake repeatedly utters “anti,” which just so happens to be the title of Rihanna’s 2016 album. He seems to make light of their past encounters and suggests that her new partner “can’t leave her” the way he did.
“Why they make it sound like I’m still hung up on you? That could never be,” Drake opens the track. “Gyal can’t ruin me. Better him than me, better it’s not me. I’m anti, I’m anti. Yeah, and the sex was average with you. Yeah, I’m anti ’cause I had it with you. Okay, I’m auntie like your daddy sister. Auntie like a family picture. And I had way badder bi**hes than you, TBH. Yeah, that man, he still with you, he can’t leave you. Y’all go on vacation, I bet it’s Antilles.”
On “Virginia Beach,” Drake alludes to another former lover’s level of education. He mentions a woman he could’ve “treated better” and suggests that she’s acting as if she holds a degree from Parsons. This reference is significant because Rihanna is an honorary alumna of the Parsons School of Design.
“I know what you say. You say I could’ve treated you better or whatever, but I don’t know, I think I did alright. Know what I’m sayin’? And you know how you get. Drawin’ conclusions like you got a Parsons degree or somethin’. I could’ve treated you better, that’s crazy. Nope.”
The online community wasted no time in analyzing and reacting to the situation. One Twitter user commented, “‘Drake dissed Rihanna,’ my baby she is somewhere changing diapers for the 20th time this morning… that lady does not gaf lmfao.” Another user joked, “Drake is a multimillionaire who can’t keep a woman, Rihanna just had two kids back to back. One of them got trash box, and I don’t think it’s Rihanna.”
“Drake said Rihanna got trash, that’s all I needed to know,” quipped another account. Another observer pointed out, “Rihanna is now a happily married mother of TWO, and Drake is still throwing subs at her.”
The history between Drake and Rihanna has been a subject of speculation since around 2009/2010, with the duo being romantically linked on and off until 2018. In a 2018 interview with Vogue, Rihanna discussed the moment when Drake presented her with the MTV Vanguard Award. She described the experience as “uncomfortable,” particularly when Drake professed his love for her onstage before presenting the award.
While reflecting on her relationship with the rapper after a decade of ups and downs, she stated, “We don’t have a friendship now, but we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”
The rapper revealed on Thursday that FatD may be is last album for sometime.
