Ed Sheeran has officially released his eighth studio album, Play, and he’s celebrating with an announcement post that captures both his relief and excitement at rediscovering joy in music.

Play is the album that’s made me fall in love with fun again,” Sheeran wrote. “Writing and recording Subtract was so cathartic but also so heavy. Going into Stereo after Mathematics ended I wanted to start with the polar opposite. Play celebrates love, life, culture, exploring, creativity and technicolour. I’ve loved making this record and the last 6 months have been just what I needed to get back into the swing of things—to reheat my love for pop, and popping up. It’s an album I’m immensely proud of, and just makes me feel good. I hope it does the same for you.

He also took time to thank “all my insanely talented collaborators, and all the fans along the journey who have been at all our pop ups. More to come. Play is out now, lemme know in the comments what your fav song is x.

The Album

According to Apple Music’s review, Play marks a full-on pop revival after the introspection of Subtract and Autumn Variations. The 13-track project sees Sheeran stretching into diverse global influences: the Bollywood-tinged “Sapphire,” the Persian-inspired “Azizam,” and the Punjabi-flavored “Symmetry.” He also revisits the storytelling style of earlier hits with songs like “Old Phone” and “The Vow.”

The opener, “Opening,” directly addresses Sheeran’s complicated relationship with fame, while tracks such as “In Other Words” and “For Always” lean into romance and family life.

Sheeran explained to Apple’s Zane Lowe: “I think Play will be one of the last pop hurrahs that I’ll get away with. I’m just exploring completely new different worlds and cultures, and there are superstars in the same country with different languages, and that’s super exciting as well.

The Cover

For the artwork, Sheeran holds aloft a bright, fuchsia-pink square with the word PLAY scrawled in bold white lettering across a textured background. The design is simple but striking—reflecting both the joy and the bold, exploratory energy he channels throughout the record.
