British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won his first Emmy award for the original music and lyrics of “A Beautiful Game” from “Ted Lasso.” The Grammy winning artist emerged triumphant over fellow nominee Sam Ryder for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for the song featured in the finale of Apple TV+’s ‘Ted Lasso,’ titled “So Long, Farewell.”
Ed is now halfway to becoming an EGOT artists and the ceremony also featured accolades for Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” making Yankovic halfway to EGOT.
Notably absent at the Creative Emmy Awards ceremony on Saturday, Sheeran’s victory was shared with his songwriting collaborators, the renowned producer Max Martin and Foy Vance.
The competition included another track from ‘Ted Lasso,’ titled “Fought & Lost,” co-written and performed by Sam Ryder. The category showcased original compositions from various shows, such as Netflix’s ‘Ginny & Georgia,’ Showtime’s ‘The L Word: Generation Q,’ Prime Video’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ and Roku’s ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.’
Elsewhere, HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama, “The Last of Us,” dominated the first night of the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys, securing eight awards in various categories. Wins included guest actor (Nick Offerman), guest actress (Storm Reid), editing, main title design, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, mixing, and VFX.
The delayed event, pushed from September due to industry strikes, saw other successful shows, such as “The White Lotus,” “The Bear,” and “Wednesday,” each receiving four awards.
Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman and actress Judith Light were among the winners, with the ceremony showcasing talent from various genres.
A delay moved the Emmys into Oscar season, competing with the Golden Globe Awards. The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys, focusing on reality, nonfiction, and variety programming, is scheduled for Sunday.
