Exclusive: Lauryn Hill To Release Her Second Studio Album Under New Label Deal

8x Grammy Award winner Lauryn Hill is set to release her second studio album twenty-six years after signing with Columbia Records and releasing her iconic debut solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Lauryn is now out of her multi-album deal with Columbia Records with the release of just one studio album the people said.

The new album will be via a “major distribution package deal” with a new label (unnamed), where Hill and her son YG Marley will be releasing new music according to the people.

The Fugees lead singer and rapper has rekindled her passion for music in celebration of the 25th anniversary of her groundbreaking album and following YG Marley’s breakout hit “Praise Jah In The Moonlight.” According to sources.

The 8 time Grammy award winner Hill and YG have been performing (on time) across the US including at Coachella and on Jimmy Fallon where they performed Ex-Factor, Survival and and Praise Jah In The Moonlight Medley. She joined YG Marley during his Reggae Sumfest set in Jamaica on July 19 in Jamaica at no charge the the festival according to the sources. Her performance was regarded as one of the best during the festival.

The Miseducation album, released on August 25, 1998, is ranked No. 1 on the Best Albums of All Time by Apple Music. It is certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling more than 10 million units as of February 16, 2021, in the US. It sold just over 400,000 units during its first week and topped the US Billboard 200 for four weeks.

The lead single, “Doo Wop (That Thing),” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold by the RIAA for sales surpassing 500,000 units. Other singles from the album included “Ex-Factor,” “Everything Is Everything,” and “To Zion,” inspired by her eldest son.

Hill’s certified Platinum concert album, MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, was released in May 2002 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Despite being under a multi-album deal with Sony Records, she never released another album and was eventually released from the label. Prior to her debut album Hill released two albums as part of the New Jersey music trio The Fugees. The first was Blunted on Reality on February 1, 1994, via Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records.

The album showcases the early raw talent of Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel, blending conscious lyrics with innovative production. Despite not achieving immediate commercial success, Blunted on Reality received critical acclaim for its socially aware themes and eclectic sound, laying the groundwork for the group’s future success. The singles “Nappy Heads” and “Vocab” gained moderate traction, highlighting the group’s potential in the hip-hop scene.

The group followed uo with the The Score on February 13, 1996 which received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200. It includes hit singles like “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not,” and “Fu-Gee-La,” which became anthems of the 90s. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and solidified the Fugees’ place in music history, eventually selling more than 7 million units in the US and 17 million worldwide.

Meanwhile YG Marley’s Praise Jah In The Moonlight has surpassed 3 billion streams across platforms. The song written by Hill and which samples Bob Marley’s Crisis is certified Gold in US and UK and Platinum in Canada for sales surpassed 500,000, 400,000 and 80,000 respectively.

YG is signed to William Morris talent agency, the same agency that represents Hill and his uncle Damian Marley.
