A 35-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly opening fire with a semiautomatic rifle at the Beverly Crest home of global music star and National hero of Barbados, Rihanna over the weekend. No one was injured in the incident.
“Opening fire in any populated neighborhood is extremely dangerous, puts lives at risk and will be fully prosecuted,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “Thankfully, no one was injured in this shooting, but this careless violence will not be tolerated in our community. Such shooters will find their next destination to be our jails and prisons.”
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz (DOB 6/20/90) of Orlando, Florida, was charged in case 26CJCF01519 with one count of attempted murder, 10 felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three felony counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or camper. Her arraignment was continued to March 25 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Bail has been set at $1.875 million.
According to prosecutors, Ortiz allegedly fired an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle at the property Sunday afternoon in the Beverly Crest neighborhood.
On March 8 at about 1:20 p.m., Ortiz is accused of driving up to the front of a home belonging to Rihanna in the 9500 block of Heather Road and firing the weapon multiple times at the house. Authorities said 10 people were inside or around the property at the time, including Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky, their three children, three household staff members, and two neighbors whose home was also struck.
Officials said Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were inside an Airstream trailer on the property during the shooting. Despite multiple rounds being fired, no one was struck by gunfire.
Ortiz fled the scene but was located a short time later in Sherman Oaks, where police arrested her during a traffic stop after spotting a vehicle matching the suspect description.
Prosecutors also charged Ortiz with multiple counts of assault with a firearm and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. Authorities say the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
If convicted as charged, Ortiz faces up to life in state prison.
The case is being prosecuted by Alexander Bott of the Major Crimes Division and remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.
The charges filed in this case are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
