Foreign Artists Tap Jamaica’s YouTube Charts as Launching Pad

Jamaica’s YouTube chart, tracked weekly by World Music Views since 2018 with data curated from Friday to Thursday across all official channels, has morphed into the industry’s open mic night for outsiders. Once dominated almost exclusively by local dancehall stars, it’s now looking more like a “global audition tape” over the last three weeks. This past week alone, several little-known foreign reggae acts squeezed into the Top 20, treating Jamaica’s notoriously discerning digital audience like the final boss in a video game—because if you can win over Jamaica, you can win anywhere.

This week’s chart is brought to you by Courvoisier.

At No. 1, jaame.sss pulled off what most Jamaican artists only dream about: a debut straight to the top spot. His reggae-laced “Beloved and Blessed (Reggae Version)” featuring Skatta Lopa clocked 466,933 streams. Not bad for a mysterious multimedia artist from the U.S. (government name James Demmitt), who decided that grief plus reggae equals YouTube glory. Jamaica said, “We’ll allow it,” and watched his music ads in between Jai Frai’s Toxic Talk content.

U.S. reggae-rock band Slightly Stoopid hangs on at No. 2 with “The Upside Down” (436,578 streams), proving that if you add a little skank guitar and some dubby reverb, Jamaicans might just rock with you—at least if you push it with YouTube ads.

Of course, this foreign invasion has consequences. Masicka’s “Rich Sex” drops to No. 4, Valiant’s “Passenger Princess” cruises into No. 5, and even Vybz Kartel felt the squeeze—“I Know” plunged to No. 13 after losing 67K streams. The message? Even legends aren’t safe when the tourists set up camp.

Meanwhile, Ayetian’s “Wah Yo Deh Pan” entered at No. 8, and Eddy G Bomba’s “Baddie” slid in at No. 12.

Still, the local defense is strong. Kraff Gad’s “Pretty Rockstar” jumps to No. 7 (+57K), and Alkaline’s “Key Man” unlocks new streams at No. 16, so clearly Jamaicans aren’t about to surrender their own charts without a fight.
