Jamaicans are up in arms about The Recording Academy’s decision to award SOJA’s Beauty In The Silence with the best reggae album award on Sunday. However Jamaicans were left empty handed in the other categories beyond reggae. Last year the Grammys announced that, if an album is up for Album Of The Year, then all credited featured artists, songwriters of new material, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers who worked on that album are automatically nominated.
Shenseea, reminded everyone that in addition to her contribution to Kanye West’s Donda, which lost to Jon Baptise We Care Album Of The Year, she is credited on Silver Tongue Devil with Jamaican-American singer Masego, who was up for Best Progressive R&B Album with his EP titled Studying Abroad: Extended Stay. He lost to “Table For Two” by Lucky Daye.
On Sunday she announced that although nominated she would not be attending the ceremony. Seemingly part ‘busy’ and part supporting Kanye who was barred from performing. Kanye however did win two awards in the rap categories: best rap song for Jail featuring Jay Z, and best melodic rap performance for Hurricane with the Weeknd. This totals Ye’s Grammy wins to 25.
I received my Nominee medal though! We got 4 nominations bro! 4!!! Before my album was even released 🥵 best of luck to the projects I was apart of 🤞🏼God is great
— Shenseea (@SHENYENG) April 3, 2022
Buju Banton, was also up for Believe What I Say on Donda.
In the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, Major Lazer, lost to DJ Black Coffee who won his first Grammy Award for his 2021 album titled Subconsciously. On Major Lazer’s album “Music Is the Weapon (Reloaded)”
Shenseea and Beam, are featured on Tiny; Busy Signal on the single Sun Comes Up alongside JoeBoy; and two-time Grammy nominee Skip Marley on Can’t Take It From Me. Beam, was also featured on two more tracks, namely Bam Bam with French Montana, and Rave de Favela with MC Lan and Anitta.
Masego and Jamaican producer J.L.L., whose 2014 beat was sampled on Drake’s Certified Lover Boy (CLB) album, will both share a part of the victory if the Canadian rapper wins in the Best Rap Album category.
In the Best Global Music Album category, Nigerian singer WizKid is among five nominees for his album Made In Lagos: Deluxe Edition. The project features contributions from Jamaican artists Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley on the song Blessed, and rising artist Projexx, on the song True Love with Tay Iwa. Mother Nature by Angelique Kidjo won in that category.
Jon Batiste led all 2022 nominees with 11 nods, and ended last night with 5 wins including Album Of The Year.
Batiste’s album, We Are, is rooted in black music tradition, from the New Orleans jazz he grew up with, to the classic soul of Al Green, via modern R&B. This was the first time in 14 years a black man won the award. Olivia Rodrigo won 3 and Silk Sonic swept the categories record of the year and song of the year. Batiste’s album however did not make the UK and barely reached number 86 in the US.
With much delight Anderson Paak said as he collect his final award,
“We are really trying our hardest to remain humble at this point,” with laughter, “but in the industry, we call that ‘a clean sweep’.
“To all the other nominees… the drinks is on Silk Sonic tonight.”
The songs of the group are impeccable, but neither they didn’t define the musical taste of 2021.
Doja Cat won her fist Grammy award.
