Masicka’s sophomore album “Generation Of Kings” debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae albums chart dated December 16, 2023. World Music Views first reported yesterday that the album sold 3,500 album equivalent units in streams and sales during its first week. Of that amount, 600 were pure copies, while 4,400,000 were in streams, according to data exclusively provided to WMV by Billboard sales tracker Luminate.
GOK is driven by the two singles ‘Tyrant’ and ‘Limelight’—also debuted at No. 14 on the US Billboard Heat-Seekers Albums chart and has sold 7,600 units over its lifetime, according to Luminate, including 11.1 million on-demand streams in the US.
This is the highest first-week debut for a dancehall album released in 2023 and the dancehall star’s second No. 2 album released in the holiday chart season.
The data compiled by Luminate is based on a multi-metric consumption measured in equivalent album units in the United States. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.
The hardcore artist’s first album, ‘438,’ released on December 3, 2021, had debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart after selling 2,864 album equivalent units in its first week, which includes 733 pure copies. The album became the most-streamed album by a male dancehall artist in the U.S. over a 12-month period (2021-2022), according to data provided to World Music Views by Luminate.
The last project by a Jamaican artist to debut at No. 2 on the Billboard Reggae Chart is “Gifted” by Koffee, the week of April 5, 2022 after selling 3500 album equivalent units in the US in the first week according to Luminate. The album sold 700 copies and 3,290,800 streams in one week and “Gifted” has spent a total of 45 weeks on the chart. It also debuted at number 9 on the UK top 100 albums chart.
Buju Banton‘s Upside Down 2020 after clocking combined streams and sales of over 2900 units also debuted at No. 2.
Regarding “Generation Of Kings” Masicka had commented that it is better than ‘438’. “Same thing weh we always a come with good music…I can tell you seh it’s far better than 438,” he said during a Live stream.
So far “438” has sold 50,000 units according to Billboard with data from Luminate.
Elsewhere on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart “No Love” by Byron Messia re-enters at No. 9 and spends 25 weeks on the chart. That album is the most successful dancehall album released this year.
“Backyard Sessions: Malibu Edition” by Iration also re-entering at No. 10. Meanwhile “Legend The Best Of Bob Marley and The Wailers spends a record 204 weeks at No. 1. The album is also at No. 132 on the Billboard 200 this week. Legend’s weekly sales is usually between 8,000 and 11,000 units.
“Best Of Shaggy: Boombastic Collection” by Shaggy holds the No. 3 spot and “Dutty Classics” by Sean Paul at No.4.
Stick Figure‘s World on Fire, Set In Stone and Wisdom great No. 5, 6 and 7 respectively and Greatest Hits by UB40 at No. 8.
