Legendary reggae singer George Nooks has submitted his 22nd studio album, Message In De Music, for Best Reggae Album consideration at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Released on May 5, 2024, the album features 15 singles recorded over several years with Tads Records.
Nooks began his music career in 1974 under the name Prince Mohamed, releasing six albums by 1982. Since adopting the name George Nooks in 1981, he has become a prominent figure in reggae and one of Jamaica’s most successful gospel artists.
Message In De Music marks his first project since 2018’s For You, released by VP Records. “Some real authentic, original songs that you got to check out, Message In De Music, now on all digital platforms,” Nooks shared in an interview with World Music Views at Kingston’s Terra Nova Hotel.
This year, 75 albums have been submitted for consideration in the Best Reggae Album category. If Nooks secures a nomination, it will mark his first appearance on the shortlist for music’s biggest night. First round for voting in the 2025 Grammys award began on Friday October 4 through to October 15.
Also on Friday, Nooks released a new single titled “Drifting Away,” produced by Clive Hunt under Hunt’s label, Iconic Azul, and distributed by California-based Ineffable Records. “Drifting Away” is is not on Nooks’ album but part of Hunt’s Nyabinghi Rhythm, a spiritually rooted sound inspired by Rastafarian tradition. Hunt, who has known Nooks since the 1970s when he performed as Prince Mohamed, reflected on the collaboration, saying, “George has a way of channeling emotions into his music, and I’m confident this track will connect deeply with listeners.”
Nooks, 66, shares a similar sentiment, calling Hunt “an excellent musician and arranger.” He expressed how special their first one-on-one collaboration feels, despite having worked with Hunt on previous projects.
The reggae track, written by Nooks, Rami Coleman, Kofi Hunt, and Chaka Scott, reflects shared experiences and struggles. “This song is truly motivational,” Nooks said. “You really have to listen to the words to get the real message. We’ve all faced the realities reflected in the song, and the message is clear: you have to read your Bible more.”
The single’s distinct sound is amplified by a powerful trumpet introduction in the Nyabinghi Rhythm, which Nooks describes as “a clarion call for attention.” It sets the tone for the song’s themes of perseverance and faith. “Clive’s arrangement really brings out the essence of this track,” Nooks added.
“Drifting Away” marks a new chapter for both Nooks and Hunt, blending their expertise and vision to create a track that transcends traditional reggae boundaries. As Hunt notes, “This song carries a message that will resonate far beyond the usual reggae audience. It’s about connecting spiritually and finding strength in the face of adversity.”
