As of today, May 1, 2022, all singles and albums released and available in Jamaica will be eligible for Gold and Platinum certification via a newly launched Jamaica World Music Certification program.

To be eligible for gold, albums must stream of sell the equivalent of 5000 units, while to be eligible for platinum, albums and singles must sell 10,000 equivalent units in Jamaica.

What is Jamaica Gold/Platinum Certification?

World Music Views® Gold/Platinum Certification Program was launched in May 2022 to celebrate milestone streams and sales of music in Jamaica. With over 1,000 albums, 5000 singles, digital downloads, ringtones, and music videos released each year, the certified program becomes necessary to mark the historical milestones of music in the country and region, it provides a unique historical timeline of popular music in Jamaica.

Over the years, the certification criteria in other regions have evolved to reflect changing market conditions, ensuring the currency of the Program for the evolving music industry.

Just recently Shenseea collected her gold plaque from Music Canada for selling 40,000 units of her single Blessed featuring Tyga in Canada.

The Jamaica World Music Certification database will be available for all to search past and future certifications.

Artist, rights holders and record labels are capitalizing on the full integration of streaming in Jamaica and the Caribbean since the entry of Apple Music last year and Spotify, last year. Over 150 new reggae and dancehall projects were available on iTunes, Spotify, D’Music, Audiomack, Tidal and YouTube.

Steve Urchin, manager to Sean Paul said during an interview on the World Music Views Podcast that, “Streaming puts the power in the hands of people in their own countries. We have always been the purveyors of cool and artists will now have a thermometer to measure how well they are doing.”
“Jamaicans stream most of their music on YouTube so we will have to take into account YouTube views and streams in the same way those views are counted overseas,” says Donovan Watkis CEO of World Music Views.
Music certification is a way to measure and record the historical achievement in the industry. Albums released before May 1 are not currently eligible for certifications but rights holders may apply for certification subject to checks and approval.
