The album covers for Jamaican artist Grace Jones‘ first Greatest Hits “Island Life” and Reggae legend Bob Marley‘s “Rastaman Vibration” were selected among Billboard’s The 100 Best Album Covers of All Time.
Island Life by Jones at No. 27 on the list that also features Jay-Z‘s Black Album, was released in December 3, 1985. The cover is that of a partially nude Grace Jones who was a fashion model before entering the music business. The cover was designed by her then French boyfriend Jean-Paul Goude and it helped to make Jones into an international icon.
Over the years celebrities have attempted to remake the definitive Grace Jones poses for their own brand development, and Amber Rose got the attention of Jones when she “broke the Internet” with a Grace inspired image for Complex Magazine on 2009.
Grace said about the Complex shoot, which was designed by Kanye West, “Kanye has been ripping off stuff from me and Jean-Paul Goude for a long time, so it was no surprise to me.”
The super model said her images by Jean-Paul for her original pose was a playful image.
“The work (Jean-Paul and I) did together, people were calling it racist,’ she said. ‘It wasn’t racist at all. It was him basically putting me on a pedestal.’
