Gramps Morgan revealed in an exclusive interview with WMV that he’s backing Spice’s third studio album Mirror 25 for Best Reggae Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards. He praised her career achievements, including her previous Grammy-nominated album 10.
“I gotta roll my dice on Spice,” he said. “That’s an incredible dancehall album. What she’s been able to achieve, building from the work she did with Shaggy, and everything she’s accomplished with her live performances.” Gramps also praised her strong fanbase, and impressive chart performance.
“Her fanbase, and chart success is phenomenal. I haven’t seen that in a long time, especially with her record sales,” he said.
Spice’s debut album 10 has sold 125,000 units in the U.S., driven by the success of the lead single “Go Down Deh,” featuring Shaggy and Sean Paul. The album has surpassed 300 million streams on Spotify, making it the highest-streaming album by a Jamaican woman on the platform.
Her 2014 hit single, “So Mi Like It,” recently achieved Gold certification in Canada as of July 29, 2024, and Silver certification in the UK, surpassing 40,000 and 200,000 units, respectively. This marks Spice’s first solo Gold certification and her second overall in Canada, following Go Down Deh, which is certified Platinum.
Produced by Notnice, “So Mi Like It” was part of her So Mi Like It EP, which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. The accompanying music video has amassed over 120 million views on YouTube.
Mirror 25 has only garnered 1.6 million streams on Spotify so far, and there are other female dancehall and reggae acts that have made an impact this year who may also be contenders for a trophy on music’s biggest night. Shenseea’s Never Gets Late Here released May 24 holds the title for the highest streaming album by a female reggae-dancehall artist in 2024. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart while Stefflon Don’s Island 54, released on June 28, has already surpassed 20 million streams on Spotify.
The Grammys are not based on streams or albums sales and first round of voting for the 2025 Grammy begin on October 4 and end October 15. The official nominations are set to be announce don November 8.
Gramps Morgan’s latest release “Have A Little Light” with Louis York peaked at No. 6 on the Official Jamaica YouTube Songs chart.
