Jamaican deejay Charly Black has another reason to be a party animal: his single “Gyal You A Party Animal” is now certified Gold in Brazil by Pro-Música Brasil (PMB), the organization responsible for music certification in the country.
The award recognizes sales surpassing 40,000 units, 8 million equivalent audio streams, or 40 million equivalent video streams.
This latest achievement places Black among a growing list of Jamaican Reggae, Reggae-Pop, and Dancehall artists finding massive success in Latin America, including the Marleys.
Black’s manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, told WMV in a previous interview, “The original YouTube post of ‘Party Animal’ isn’t included in the current upload. The original had 88 million views, but after transferring to VEVO, it had 212 million views. Combined, that’s over 300 million views for that track, not even counting the Daddy Yankee remix views.”
Since then, the video has now surpassed 347 million views on YouTube.
The track was first released digitally on April 14, 2015, via Allezgo Productions, and again on October 12, 2016. It is currently under Universal Music Group’s catalog and is co-produced by Demarco, Christopher Birch, and Kurt Riley.
Jones-Griffith added, “Ever since ‘Party Animal’ blew up, Charly has had a huge following in the Latin music space, so he is definitely the right artist for this collaboration that blends cultures and genres, reflecting the Gold Cup itself.”
Charly Black, who was sixth highest streaming dancehall act last year, reflecting on his previous achievements in Latin America, including a performance at CONCACAF’s Gold Cup in 2021, said, “It’s a massive look for me and for Dancehall. I have been shown crazy love by the Latin music market and fans, and this will hopefully add to that.”
He recorded the official theme song of the tournament, “Juego,” along with Colombian Latin Pop duo Cali Y El Dandee. “Cali Y El Dandee are mad cool,” he said. “So it was even better to know I would be working with them on the track.”
“The Gold Cup is something Jamaicans always get behind to support the Reggae Boyz, so hopefully this swells the patriotic pride a little more, knowing we are represented on the Official Gold Cup song. The Latin music market is massive, so being able to tap into it is a blessing,” he added.
“Gyal You A Party Animal” was also certified Gold on January 22, 2019, in the US for selling 500,000 single equivalent units. It has nearly 300 million streams on Spotify.
