“Gyalis” by Capella Grey is now certified Silver in the U.K. for selling 200,000 units in that country. The award was issued on Friday March 8, 2024 by the British Phonographic industry with information from the Official Charts Company for streams and sales combined. The song which samples “Back That Azz Up” (1999) by Juvenile was released on January 4, 2021, under Capitol Records and Allepac the Family.
As a result of the sample writing credits is given to Mannie Fresh, Lil Wayne, and Juvenile and peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 38 on the Hot 100. In Canada on the Canadian Hot 100 the song peaked at 84, #34 on the New Zealand Hot Singles, 161 on the Global 200 (Billboard), #65 on the UK Singles (OCC), UK Hip Hop/R&B (OCC) at 26, and at #6 on the US Rhythmic (Billboard).
Grey recounted to Billboard the genesis of the song, crafted during his time in Los Angeles. The inspiration struck spontaneously, resulting in a blend of the iconic “Back That Azz Up” sample into an uptown vibe, capturing the essence of club moments.
For the Billboard Year-end charts “Gyalis” landed at number 62 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for 2021. “Gyalis” was previously certified Platinum certification in the United States from the RIAA, signifying 1,000,000 units/sales on November 22.
An official remix, featuring Popcaan and Chris Brown, was released on October 1, 2021 and on May 31, 2022, Grey released a “Shemix” featuring Chlöe, responding to viral demand following Chlöe’s rendition.
