The upcoming Bob Marley biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love,” features several second generation Jamaican artists making their major Hollywood film debut and some returning to the big screen. Among them are:
- Naomi Cowan: Daughter of Jamaican singers Dr. Carlene Davis-Cowan and Tommy Cowan, Cowan takes on the role of iconic I-Threes member Marcia Griffiths.
- Sevana (Anna-Sharé Blake): Former member of Protoje’s In.Digg.Nation, Sevana plays Judy Mowatt, another I-Threes member, and has been making her mark as a solo artist.
- Aston Barrett Jr.: Multi-instrumentalist Barrett Jr., son of Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, portrays his real-life father, a veteran Reggae musician known for his bass guitar skills.
- Hector Roots Lewis: Original member of Chronixx’s Zinc Fenc Redemption Band and lead singer in Iration band. Lewis plays the role of Carlton ‘Carly’ Barrett, the longtime drummer of Bob Marley and The Wailers. Hector, a graduate of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, has been featured in short films before.
- Davo (David Kerr): Junior Marvin’s character is represented by his son, Davo, an R&B singer blending Reggae and R&B in his music.
- Sheldon Shepherd: Founding member and lead singer of The No-Maddz, Shepherd plays Neville Garrick, Marley’s friend and art director. He has been in several movies before including the Storm Saulter Directed film “Betta Muss Come”(2011) which tackles the circumstances surrounding the Green Bay Massacre in the 1970s in Jamaica. He was also the main character in the 2018 Idris Elba directed film Yardie among other short films.
- Gawaine ‘J-Summa’ Campbell: Singer, songwriter, and guitarist, J-Summa takes on the role of Antonio ‘Gilly’ Gilbert, Marley’s chef on the Exodus tour.
The film’s portrayal of Marley’s life between 1976 and 1978, covers significant events such as the attempted assassination and the creation of the “Exodus” album. Set for release on February 14, 2024, it is executive-produced by Orly Marley, Richard Hewitt, and Matt Solodky, with additional co-producers including Ziggy and Rita Marley, Cedella Marley, Brad Pitt, Robert Teitel, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner.
