IFPI Engaging With Music 2023: Hip Hop and Reggae Rank Top 3 and Top 10 Most Popular Music Globally

According to the Engaging With Music Report 2023 conducted by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, for the second consecutive year, Hip Hop ranks third, and Reggae holds the tenth position as the most popular genres of music globally.

This annual report, released on Monday (December 11) which explores how music fans listen and discover music along with other habits  relating to music. The study conducted by the esteemed music organization that represents over 8,000 record company members worldwide stands as the most extensive music-focused insights and analysis of its kind.

This year Hip Hop, Latin and Reggae secure their positions in the top ten among over 700 different genres named by people as their typical music choices. Some genres that didn’t make the cut include Afrobeats, Accordion, Kannywood, and Zarzuela. Nevertheless, this reflects the diverse music landscape that fans now enjoy globally, according to the IFPI.

IFPI’s data is derived from a survey conducted between August and October 2023 across 26 countries, gathering the views of over 43,000 respondents aged between 16-64. The panels were nationally representative in each country.

Changes in the ranking compared to last year include R&B up to No. 6 (up from 7 last year),  Country Music which is at No.8 (up from 9 last year) and Soundtracks at No. 9 (down from 8 last year. Pop music remains the most popular genre worldwide followed by Rock at No. 2 and Hip Hop and No. 3/ Dance/Electronic Music at No. 4.

Other Key takeaways from IFPI’s Engaging with Music 2023 report include data showing that people are keen on listening to their local music with only 57% of people value access to music from around the world.
For example 65% of Nigerians listen Afrobeats while 65% of Japanese music audience listen to J-Pop. Amapiano is extremely popular in South Africa with 42% listernship over other genres of music,
Streaming has also become more integrated in the lives of music listens around the world with
73% of people listen through licensed audio streaming services (subscription and ad-supported). Subscription audio streaming services saw a 7% growth in time spent listening to music worldwide.
The industry has also gone through a drastic change as to relates to only piracy with 29% of respondents use unlicensed or illegal methods to listen to or obtain music while there is a small demographic of 13% who still buy CDs. 
IFPI Chief Executive Frances Moore emphasizes the significance of music in people’s lives. Addresses the ongoing issue of unlicensed music and the need to protect the value of music.

“Music piracy is still very much an issue, with stream ripping and the use of illegal mobile apps among the leading causes for concern. This illegal activity has a severe and direct impact on royalties which should be returning to those investing in and creating music. We will continue to work with governments and the wider music industry to ensure the most secure digital environment possible for music creators and fans alike.”
