Inner Circle’s reggae classic “Bad Boys (Theme from Cops)” has been officially certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after surpassing one million units in combined sales and streams in the United States. The certification was awarded on Friday March 4, 2026, almost four decades since its was originally released.

Recorded by the Jamaican reggae band Inner Circle and written by Ian Lewis, “Bad Boys” was first released in October 1987 on the group’s album One Way. Although the song initially gained modest attention, it experienced a major breakthrough years later following a 1993 re-release, which propelled it into the mainstream and helped it reach No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the Billboard Top 40 Mainstream chart.

Beyond its chart success, “Bad Boys” became one of the most recognizable reggae songs in popular culture. The track was famously chosen as the opening theme for the American documentary television series Cops after a producer for the show—who was a fan of Inner Circle—selected the song for the program. Its unforgettable chorus, “Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?”, quickly became synonymous with the long-running show.

The song’s cultural influence expanded even further when it inspired the title of the “Bad Boys” film franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The series, which began in 1995, used the Inner Circle hit as its theme and has since grown into one of Hollywood’s most successful action franchises, generating over two billion dollars at the global box office across multiple installments.

Reflecting on the track’s legacy, Inner Circle’s Ian Lewis once pointed to the song as an example of how music can grow far beyond its original release. “‘Bad Boys’ was one song that spanned four movies and made over two billion dollars. A song is a song and you don’t know where it will go,” Lewis said.

“Bad Boys” also emerged during a significant period for reggae and dancehall music internationally. The early 1990s saw several Jamaican artists—including Shabba Ranks, Patra, Super Cat, and Buju Banton—achieve chart success worldwide, helping bring Caribbean music further into the global mainstream.
