“Instruction” by Jax Jones, featuring Demi Lovato and Stefflon Don has surpassed 300 million streams on Spotify.
The dancehall infused dance single produced by Jones and Mark Ralph was released on June 16, 2017 via German – British Record label Polydor, a division of Universal Group.
It is Stefflon Don’s second song to reach this milestone, Lovato’s fourteenth, and Jones’ seventh on Spotify.
The track appears on Jones’ EP “Snacks” and included in the deluxe edition of Lovato’s sixth studio album “Tell Me You Love Me.” Both Jones and Demi posted the track first on Twitter.
The song is laden with samba school drum, a reggaeton dance EDM beat and Stefflon Don’s Jamaican dancehall patois flow. Jones said his Caribbean and Latin influence goes all the way back to his childhood. “He was playing a lot of Fela Kuti in the house,” Jones remembers of his Step-father. “A lot of hip hop and R&B, what we call Bashment music, you know, that Jamaican stuff. I collected the vinyls, and I used to steal his records and make copies of them without him knowing, so I could listen to them on my own.”
He tells Billboard, “My feel when I made the tune was it might be too bombastic for people, like too loud, but I’m hoping everyone from the 50-year-old guy riding through the highways on his Harley, down to the 16-year-old just grooving in her bedroom, can feel this,” Jones explained. “It’s my take on what’s going on out there on radio… You’ve got the dancehall influence everywhere, so I’m thinking, ‘How can I explore that within dance music at my tempo?’ which is a lot faster than what’s on radio at the moment.”
Jones and Lovato performed the track on Good Morning America on August 18, 2017, and the two joined Stefflon Don on BBC’s Sounds Like Friday Night Show in November 2017.
The song reached No. 3 on the U.K. Dance singles chart a Chart and number 13 on the Singles Chart. It also achieved Platinum certifications in the UK (600,000) and Poland (50,000), Gold In Australia (35,000), Brazil (30,000), and Germany(200,000), Canada (40,000), Denmark (45,000), France (100,000), Italy (25,000), and Spain (30,000).
