Jamaican Lawyer Weighs In on Cardi B’s BZR Weekend Cancellation Amid “No Refund” Policy

Fans who purchased tickets to BZR Weekend in Jamaica to see American rapper Cardi B perform may have grounds to seek refunds following the announcement that she will no longer be appearing at the event.

The development has sparked questions about consumer rights, particularly for patrons who purchased tickets primarily to see the Grammy-winning entertainer, who was advertised as a headliner.

Jamaican attorney Guyah Tolan, of Guyah Tolan & Associates, has weighed in on the matter, explaining that while the event’s ticketing terms include a no-refund policy, such disclaimers do not necessarily override consumer protections under Jamaican law.

In a video shared on TikTok, Tolan addressed the concerns of ticket holders following news of Cardi B’s withdrawal.

“By now, everybody who has bought a ticket to the Cardi B concert has seen that it is said in the media that Cardi B is no longer performing. What does that mean? Are you stuck with the tickets? And to see artists that you did not necessarily want to see as she was the headliner and mainly the reason why you purchased the tickets? Well, what can you do?” she questioned.

Tolan pointed to Jamaica’s Consumer Protection Act, explaining that consumers have legal protections against misleading representations, which could become relevant when an advertised headliner is removed from an event’s lineup.

“Under the Jamaican Consumer Protection Act, the law relates to misleading and advertising and consumers having protections against certain false or misleading representations. Now, the Fair Trading Commission has also identified the failure of scheduled artists to perform as a potential misleading advertising issue,” she explained.

She further noted that the withdrawal of a major performer could represent a significant change to what ticket holders originally paid to experience.

“If the headliner was the major reason you purchased a ticket in the first place, their withdrawal could be a material change to what was advertised,” Tolan said.

BZR Weekend’s No-Refund Policy

The issue is particularly significant given the refund policy published on the event’s ticketing platform, Jamaica.tikkets.com, which outlines strict conditions regarding ticket purchases.

Under the section titled “Merchant policy,” the terms state:

“All sales to and purchases by any persons are final and that there shall not be any refund of any sums paid for tickets for Events and/or for purchasing official merchandise related to the event.”

The policy further states that transaction fees, including commissions and processing charges payable to Kanoo, are non-refundable.

Additionally, under its “Force Majeure” section, the terms indicate that where certain events beyond the organiser’s control result in the cancellation of one or more events, ticket holders will not receive refunds.

The policy states, in part, that “there will be no refund whatsoever for tickets purchased” in the event of such cancellations.

However, it remains unclear whether those provisions would apply to Cardi B’s withdrawal, particularly if BZR Weekend proceeds with other scheduled performers.

Lawyer Says No-Refund Disclaimer Does Not Automatically Remove Consumer Rights

Despite the wording of the ticketing policy, Tolan stressed that a no-refund clause does not automatically protect event organisers from every potential contractual or consumer protection claim.

“And that no refunds disclaimer, which I believe at the time when you were purchasing your ticket, there was something that says no refunds, rain or shine the party I keep, it does not automatically excuse every breach of contract or override every consumer right,” she said.

According to the attorney, whether affected patrons are legally entitled to recover their money would depend on the specific circumstances surrounding the cancellation and the contractual arrangements governing ticket purchases.

“Whether you are entitled to a refund will be based on the circumstances like what is the event organizer’s excuse and other things such as the event terms, etc,” she explained.

Her comments suggest that ticket holders may have grounds to challenge the no-refund policy depending on how Cardi B’s appearance was advertised, the reasons for her withdrawal and whether the change substantially affects what consumers were promised.

However, the cancellation of a headline performance does not automatically establish that every ticket holder is legally entitled to a refund.

BZR Weekend is scheduled to take place from October 16 to 19, 2026, at the National Stadium, Independence Park, Kingston, Jamaica.

As questions continue to surround Cardi B’s withdrawal, patrons are left awaiting clarity on whether any refund arrangements or alternative accommodations will be offered.

WMV reached out to BZR for comment following Cardi B’s announcement. However, hours after the announcement, organisers told WMV that they had no response at this time.
