Rapper turned billionaire businessman Jay-Z filed a lawsuit on Monday against spirit company Bacardi, over the brand’s lack of financial transparency regarding their decade long partnership with D’Usse.
TMZ, reports that the lawsuit was filed by the Jigga Man’s company SC Liquor, which demands Bacardi share all information relating to their deal so that the Roc-nation mogul can see exactly how much is being generated from the sales of D’Usse cognac, a brand in which Bacardi and Jay-Z has a 50/50 partnership.
Jay-Z has co-owns D’Usse since 2011, and famously drank it straight out of one of the Grammy awards he won for Watch The Throne in 2013. The suit demands that Jay be given access to the production warehouses, D’Usse barrels, bottles and all other info regarding Bacardi’s inventory-keeping process. SC Liquor writes it needs to “monitor the conduct of all business related to the brand in order to protect SC’s rights” as a partner.
Just last week Kanye West, whom Jay -Z did the “Watch The Throne” during his infamous Drink Champs interview mentioned the possibility of a Watch The Throne 2 album with Jay-Z. Without saying much Ye shared a drink of Jay-Z’s Dusse with N.O.R.E and DJ Effn and toasted to Watch The Throne 2. “This D’usse is brought to you by my brother, Hov,” he said. “Courtesy of The Throne. Part two coming soon.”
Watch the Throne original is Jay and Ye’s 2011 collaborative studio album released on Roc-A-Fella Records/Defjam Recordings/Roc-Nation. The album features guest appearances from Frank Ocean, The-Dream, Beyoncé and Mr Hudson and more. It is currently certified 5 times Platinum in the U.S by the RIAA and Platinum in the U.K. by the BPI. Much of the recording for the album took place in Hawaii, Australia and the U.K.
Rumors of Watch the Throne 2 have been circulating as early as 2013. In September 2018, Kanye West confirmed the album was in the works when he tweeted: “throne2 coming soon.” Then Ye’s protégé Justin Laboy tweeted in 2021 “Watch The Throne 2 coming end of the year. Kanye & Hov about to make history AGAIN,” he wrote on Twitter, adding, “YES. HOV & YE back building again. They both rich enough to quit rapping, but the passion they share of making the fans happy got them back working.”
