Hip Hop superstar Jay-Z took home his second Primetime Emmy in as many years at the 2023 Creative Arts Awards. The delayed ceremony, originally scheduled for September, witnessed the triumph of exceptional talent across various categories in the music industry.
The ceremony’s night one featured winners in five of the seven music categories, with the remaining two announced the following night. WMV previously reported that pop titans Ed Sheeran and Max Martin, alongside Foy Vance, secured their inaugural Primetime Emmys for outstanding original music and lyrics with “A Beautiful Game,” crafted for an episode of “Ted Lasso.”
Jay-Z’s outstanding directing for a variety special in “The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna,” which he co-directed with Hamish Hamilton, marked his second consecutive Emmy victory. Last year, Jay-Z secured a win as an executive producer for the Super Bowl Halftime Show featuring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent. The show also claimed outstanding production design for a variety special this year.
The list of Emmy winners 2023 also includes Greg Phillinganes for outstanding music direction, Danny Elfman for outstanding original main title theme music, Cristobal Tapia de Veer for outstanding music composition for a series, and John Powell for outstanding music composition for a documentary series or special.
Elton John’s “Farewell From Dodger Stadium” and “Moonage Daydream,” exploring David Bowie’s journey, each secured two awards. TV legend Carol Burnett also shone with her eighth Emmy for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) for “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”
“The Last of Us” emerged as the top winner at the Creative Arts Emmys, with eight awards, followed by “Welcome to Wrexham” with five. Other notable winners included “The Bear,” “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” “Wednesday,” and “The White Lotus,” each clinching four awards.
The awards ceremony is set to be broadcast on January 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on FXX, with streaming available on Hulu starting January 14. The main Primetime Emmy telecast will air on January 15, marking the conclusion of the delayed event.
