R&B singer Justine Skye dresses up as Jamaican social media personality “Peanut Dread” in what she describes as “Probably her best Halloween look ever.”

On instagram the former Atlantic Records artist posted the pictures with the phrase “RADAM” as caption to her more than 3 million followers. ‘RADAM’ was made popular but TIKTOK personality Peanut Dread. Skye’s choice of Halloween attire is also in keeping with her Jamaican roots. Her grandfather is the Jamaican born US Ambassador to Jamaica Nick Perry and Jamaicans have had a long love affair with the mesh marina. Both men and women wear the iconic black, red, green and gold colors. The colors are from the Ethiopian flag but the mesh marina itself originated as a European under-garment, or as Jamaicans say “ under-shirt”. It became a uniform for rude boy fashion in the ’70s and was usually worn underneath a button up shirt with only one button at the top.

The original marinas were worn as one color but then took on new life as dancehall fashion with more colors added in the 1990s. Artists like Spragga Benz, Louis Culture, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton all sported red, gold and green Marinas during their photoshoots, music videos and live performances.

Rihanna was seen sporting the Red, Gold and Green Mesh Marina in her number one hit music video Work with Drake.

In March Skye congratulated her grandfather, who attended Kingston College for achieving his dream of becoming United States Ambassador to Jamaica.

Perry was confirmed by the US Senate with more than the required 51 votes to make him the new US Ambassador to the island. He is the first Jamaican-born American to hold the position.

In a Tweet on Saturday (March 12), Skye, who is known for her songs Collidewith Tyga and Know Myself, wrote: “My grandfather accomplished a huge dream of his… US Ambassador of Jamaica! LETS GOOO!” alongside the Jamaica flag emoji.

He will replace former Ambassador Donald Tapia, whose appointment ended in 2021 with the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

Perry, 71, is a former member of the New York State Assembly for the 58th district, which includes the neighborhood of East Flatbush, as well as portions of Canarsie and Brownsville, among other neighborhoods located in the borough of Brooklyn.

Nick Perry, as he is affectionately called, was born and raised in Saint Andrew Parish and graduated from Kingston College before leaving Brooklyn College with a B.A. degree in political science. He later returned to Brooklyn College to study for an M.A. in Public Policy and Administration.

He worked at the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union before immigrating to the United States in 1971.

According to her bio, Justine was 8 years old when her grandfather, then-Assemblyman Nick Perry of the 58th Assembly District in Brooklyn, New York realized she had a gift. Justine accompanied Perry to political events where she would often sing the National Anthem and the Black National Anthem.

Skye left Atlantic in 2016 in favor of Roc Nation and Republic Records and released EP 8 Ounces, later that year.

Her debut album Ultraviolet was released on January 18, 2018 . The album featured the singles “U Don’t Know” (featuring Wizkid), “Back for More” (featuring Jeremih), and “Don’t Think About It”. The music video for “Don’t Think About It” was released on the same day as the pre-order, December 8, and the song “Good Love” became available with the album pre-order.

In June 2021, her third studio album, Space & Time, was released. The album was executively produced by Grammy award winning producer Timbaland.

In October 2017, she drew headlines when she kneeled down during a portion of her singing of the National Anthem at the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, New York at a Brooklyn Nets game.

Sky told WMV today that she is not longer with Roc Nation.
